MOCS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL QUOTES
Game No. 26 | Chattanooga vs. Wofford | McKenzie Arena | Feb. 9, 2015
Head Coach Jim Foster
It has to feel good to see the other team only has 13 points at the half…
“When we get on a role defensively, stay solid and do what we need to do and want to do on a regular basis, we're a pretty good defensive basketball team so there are times where that is going to happen as a result.”
On Chattanooga's rebounding:
“Rebounding is probably the most overrated part of the stat sheet, especially against teams that do it in flurries. I can think of some games where we got outrebounded by eight or nine but there were two situations where they got four or five rebounds on a possession so that makes the stats look impressive but what did they accomplish?
Especially if they don't score…
“Yeah, now that is frustrating. You get four or five offensive rebounds and you walk away with no points. That's frustrating. I think we are a decent rebounding team and more people are starting to understand what they are good at. Moses [Johnson] would be case in point. Moses is by far our best rebounding guard but she doesn't need to compete to be our best playmaking guard or our best shooting guard. Guard people and rebound and then what comes your way, you will find some points. So just starting to understand roles, Sydney [Vanlandingham] is strong, very strong. She got a bunch of rebounds tonight in her minutes played by using her strength and leveraging and anticipating shots. It will be day to day, game to game but we've won some games kind of handily this year getting hammered on the boards by the stat sheet. If a team has a lousy night shooting fouls there is really a lot of rebounds available. Maybe your stats get patted that way in that total if you miss half of your foul shots.
What did you think about playing your subs tonight?
“I think they did some good things and the film will let me know more.”
Is part of your playing everyone so many minutes getting you ready for the conference tournament?
“No, first of all I get angry because it's generally people talking about women. These kids don't get tired. If I go back to when I was 18-22, I was up late and up early. They just have energy; fatigue is just not a part of it. Herbie McGhee is a friend and just won his 1000th game. Herbie doesn't sub. He hasn't for 40 something years. If you were in his first five you are going to play a lot of minutes. He does it all year long and he has won a thousand games.
Sophomore Forward Jasmine Joyner
“I want to say my arms had a big part of it today because they were out there. Sometimes, I would just stand there and the ball would just come to my hands; I would just go with it at the time. The energy in our defense was great in the first and second half.”
Were you having fun out there?
“I was. I try to have fun as much as I can on the court because this is something I love doing with the people that I love.”
What was Coach Foster's half time report?
"He just says stay focused because sometimes we can get off focus. You can see in the second half that's when we started having unfocused turnovers, then we started fouling a lot. But we just have to stay focused and keep the energy up and play defense.”
Sophomore Guard Sydney Vanlandingham
Do you feel like the first year players are able to contribute more?
“I think we're all finding that comfortable rhythm. It's taken some of us all season long to find that grove, that one little thing that clicks for us. I know AC's shots have been looking great in practice. She didn't knock it down like she wanted to tonight, but I know it's coming. She just has to find that rhythm. Ansley [Chilton] same thing; she made a really strong move tonight that looked great. We've been telling her the whole time what she's capable of. You just have to feel it for yourself, and I think she's finally figuring it out.”
Thoughts on rebounds:
“It's something I've been trying to work on. When my shots aren't falling, it's in my control, but to make up for it I try to go get a rebound. Like Jasmine [Joyner] said. I was in the right place at the right time. Playing hard contributes to that.”
What was the game plan for the guards?
“Do what we do on defense. Coach Foster, he puts us in a great defense and if we just follow what he says and we do what we do, it works for us. That's what our guards did.”
