Back 9 Charge Has Mocs within Five after 18 Holes

POOLER, Ga.---The Chattanooga Mocs women's golf team shot 6-over par 294 today at Savannah Quarters Country Club. The Mocs are five shots behind early leader Furman turning in a 1-over 289. The story for the Mocs was apt for a “Masters Sunday” charge.
The team was 13 over thru nine holes with three players at 3 over and two more at four. That put the squad 10 strokes behind the Paladins. They turned it around quickly.
Freshman Megan Woods birdied 10. Emily McLennan and Agathe Sauzon followed with back-to-back birds on 11 just a little later. Woods and Cris Perez were par machines combining to shoot 1 under on the back side. That set up the fireworks from the upper classmen.
McLennan birdied the par 3 15th and par 5 17th. Sauzon, playing in the group behind, just missed birdies on 13 through 16, but she closed strong. The putts fell on 17 and 18 to cement a 7 under nine coming in for the 294. It's the lowest first round score in the event for the Mocs.
“(Emily and Agathe) were clutch coming in,” coach Colette Murray stated. “I haven't gotten a chance to really study our scores, but people were saying what a great back nine it was. I think we just needed to get settled coming through the turn.
“I think it was a solid day,” she added. “We were pretty slow getting out of the gate, but we more than made up for that on the back nine. They showed a lot of fight, a lot of grit and determination, so I'm pretty pleased.
Murray was especially proud when asked about the play of her freshmen.
“Awesome,” she succinctly put it. “They took care of business today. They did everything they were expected to do.
“I'm looking forward to tomorrow.”
McLennan is tied for fifth with an even-par 72. Sauzon is tied in seventh at 1 over, one ahead of Woods tied for 11th with a 74. Perez posted 16 pars en route to a 3-over 75. She is tied for 16th. Isabella Loza had the drop score of 78.
Furman's Alice Chen is tied with Hannah Mae Deems (Mercer) in the lead at 2 under. The Paladins' Taylor Totland and Ashley Thompson (Western Carolina) are tied for third at 71. Western Carolina is in third at 298, followed closely by Samford in fourth at 29.
The Mocs return to the tee at 9:40 a.m., Monday morning for the second 18. They're paired with Furman and WCU with Loza leading off trailed by Perez, Woods, Sauzon and McLennan. Links to live scoring and tee times are above.
