Mocs Within Striking Distance after Back 9 Charge

POOLER, Ga.---The Chattanooga Mocs women's golf team shot its second-best 18 of the season with an even-par 288. Furman was just a little better this day shooting a tourney record 4-under 284. It extends its lead over the Mocs to nine strokes, 573 to 582, with 18 holes remaining.
“You have to give credit where credit is due,” coach Colette Murray said. “Furman played great today. They come out of the gate faster than we do, but I have to credit our team for a great back nine yet again.”
The Paladins got off to another quick start powered by Alice Chen. Chen birdied the first five holes leading her squad to 8 under early in the round. They made the turn at 5 under, while the Mocs were 5 over through nine. That extended Furman's lead to 15 shots.
Much like round one, Chattanooga was undaunted. It played holes 10-14 at 5 under to close the gap by six shots. The charge was sparked by Emily McLennan and Agathe Sauzon. The duo combined to shoot 7 under over the final nine to get the team within nine with 18 holes to go.
McLennan was marvelous shooting 3 under for the day. After opening with a bogey five, she tallied five birdies including four in the last six holes. She is tied for third at 3 under overall (141) with Mercer's Hannah Mae Downs. They trail co-leaders Chen and Taylor Totland of Furman by one.
Sauzon carded 1-under 71 to move into a tie for fifth with Samford's Bailey Gray at even par (144). Gray had the low round of the day with a 68. Sauzon also had five birdies for her 18. She is 6 under on the back nine through two rounds, while McLennan is 7 under.
The rest of the lineup was solid for the Mocs. Freshman Cris Perez had a birdie and 15 pars shooting 1-over 73. She is tied for 11th (148), one clear of teammate Megan Woods who is tied for 14th (149) after a 75 today. Isabella Loza also carded 75 today.
“We let a few shots go on the last few holes,” Murray added. “We also gained a couple down the lineup. We are due a low round.
“Let's hope it comes tomorrow.”
The Mocs return to the tee at 8:50 a.m., Tuesday morning for the final 18. They're paired with Furman and Samford with Loza leading off trailed by Woods, Perez, Sauzon and McLennan. Links to live scoring and tee times are above.
