In a back-and-forth game against Mars Hill, a pair of juniors proved to be the difference makers that led to a 44-34 Chattanooga Mocs victory at home. The Mocs utilized the one-two punch of running back
Derrick Craine on the ground, and wide receiver
Xavier Borishade through the air.
Â
Both players recorded career highs against Mars Hill, and combined for 315 of the team's 518 total yards.
Â
"Give our offense credit, I mean, they did a really nice job," coach
Russ Huesman said. "Offensively, we played good. We converted some key third-down plays. We kept drives alive."
"We took some shots - some deep shots - and got the one that was huge that got us out of our own endzone. That was a big throw-and-catch."
Â
On top of recording career-high numbers for the Craine and Borishade, it marked the first time the Mocs had a 100-yard rusher and receiver since 2012 against Elon.
Â
"It all starts with the front five," said Craine, who also finished the game with four touchdowns. "Obviously they have to move people out of the way and I have to make the reads, but without the other guys on the field, a 169-yard game does not happen.
Â
"Everybody played great and did their assignments, so it made it actually pretty easy for me to run today."
Â
The 5-foot-10, 205-pound used his hard-nosed style of play to punch through the goal line for three of his rushing scores from less than 10 yards out, while his lone touchdown reception was from six.
Â
"The fact that Mars Hill had a tie ball game made us offensively all look at each other and say that we need to get it going, score, make some plays and start getting some separation on the scoreboard," Craine said.
Â
To cap off his big day on the ground, his 169 yards accounted for over half of the team's 253 total.
Â
Through the air, Borishade became quarterback
Jacob Huesman's favorite target with 10 receptions for a career high of 116 yards.
Â
"We wanted to come out and execute offensively better than we did last week, and I'm thankful for Jacob, the offensive line and all the other receivers that were able to help me," said the 5-foot-10, 175-pound receiver. "We watched a lot of film on [Mars Hill] and tried to find out their tendencies to see what they would do in certain situations.
Â
"We just wanted to find out those specific ways to exploit them after a hard week of practice. Any day can be the last day you play football, so you have to go out there and play as hard as you can."
Â
A huge portion of the junior's yards came in the third quarter, when Huesman connected with Borishade for a 50-yard reception.
Â
Overall, Borishade's 116 yards accounted for just below 44 percent of UTC's 265 total in the air.
Â
With the first win of the 2015 season in the books, Craine and Borishade plan on using the win's momentum for their road matchup against Samford next Saturday.
Â
"We are going to have to prepare, get our assignments down, get ready for some hard, physical football against Samford," Craine said. "Overall this game involves a lot of trust. We're all going to go into practice next week and work hard."
Â
"This game was a big confidence booster for us," Borishade said. "We're going to have to go on the road against Samford, who is a great team. With the wins, we just have to take it and roll with it.
Â
"You go, play your game and see what happens."
