CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team scored a pair of second half goals, but it wouldn't be enough as they fell 3-2 at Austin Peay Sunday afternoon in Clarksville, Tenn.
"We have to keep focus throughout the entire match," Chattanooga head coach
Gavin McKinney said. "We keep getting punished for mistakes. I must find a way for this group to put in solid performances over 90 minutes."
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half with the Lady Govs edging Chattanooga 6-5 on shots taken, however, the Mocs had a 3-0 advantage on corner kicks in the opening frame.
The second half would see all of the scoring with Austin Peay striking first with Kirstin Robertson scoring on a follow up to a blocked shot in the 58
th minute. It would just take two minutes for the Govs to score their second goal. This time Robertson sent a through ball down the center to Pamela Penaloza who got past the Mocs' senior keeper
Katie Emig (Knoxville, Tenn.) who came out to try for the save.
Chattanooga junior
Ellie Myrick (Knoxville, Tenn.) cut the lead to one goal on a free kick from just outside the box at the 71:03 mark to make it 2-1.
Austin Peay pushed its advantage back to two goals when Robertson fired a low shot from the left side and hit the far post for the score making it 3-1 with less than nine minutes remaining.
The Mocs didn't give in. Freshman
Karina Jensen (Collierville, Tenn.) picked up the corner from junior
McKenzie Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) and headed the ball into the back post. That made it 3-2 with 5:30 remaining in regulation for her first collegiate goal.
The finals minutes, however, saw just one kick by the Mocs and UTC falls to 2-6-1 on the year. Austin Peay improves to 5-4 overall.
The Govs edged UTC 12-10 on shots with a 6-3 shots on goal advantage. Myrick, junior
Peyton McCollum (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and freshman
Anna Moore () each had two shots for the Mocs. Robertson led Austin Peay with a game-high five shots.
Emig had three saves for Chattanooga and APSU's Lindsey Todd made just one save on three shots faced.
Chattanooga will remain on the road, opening the Southern Conference portion of its schedule Friday night at Furman and then Sunday at Wofford.
"Going forward into conference play, there are no easy games," McKinney said. "We will work very hard this week in hopes to improve our performance."
Friday's match is set to kick off at 7:00 p.m. Live stats and video streaming will be available at GoMocs.com.
