SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team defeated Wofford 2-1 Sunday afternoon in Spartanburg, S.C. The Mocs improve to 3-7-1 overall and 1-1 in Southern Conference action while the Terriers fall to 2-9 on the year and 0-2 against the conference.
Â
Chattanooga netted its first goal in the opening frame following a corner kick. Junior
Ellie Myrick's (Knoxville, Tenn.) corner went to the far side of the box and was sent back across. Myrick picked it up and sent it back to the far side again. Junior
Peyton McCollum (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) won the header and sent it to freshman
Jordan Mueller (Hendersonville, Tenn.) on the left side and she booted it in off the side of her right foot into the bottom of the goal for her second score this year.
Â
"Scoring the first goal was hugely important for us," Chattanooga head coach
Gavin McKinney said. "We just came off a tough match at Furman Friday night and I thought our response was great."
Â
The Mocs held that lead through the half and through the first third of the second period.
Â
Wofford knotted it up in the 61
st minute with Elise Fennegan's first goal this season. She took a pass from Emma Fletcher and headed in the shot to the upper right corner.
Â
It didn't take long for McCollum to get her first game-winning goal of the season. At the 62:37 mark of the match, McCollum picked up a pass from
Anna Moore (Bristol, Ten.) and the Wofford keeper fell to leave the net open. McCollum connected on a 15-yard shot to make it 2-1 and the eventual final score.
Â
"It was important for Peyton to get on the score sheet today," McKinney said. "Strikers, like all positions, thrive on confidence."
Â
The Terriers outshot the Mocs 13-10 with each team tallying six shots on goal. Chattanooga freshman keeper
Melia Correa (Clarksville, Tenn.) made five saves for her first collegiate win.
Â
"I thought Melia performed really well," McKinney said. "She made a great save late in the game that she tipped over the bar.
Â
Myrick had a team-high four shots with two on goal while Mueller and freshman
Hannah Torbett (Johnson City, Tenn.) each had two.
Â
With her goal and assist today, McCollum now leads the team in scoring with 11 points on four goals and three assists. Myrick is second with four goals and two assists for 10 points.
Â
"Overall the entire team performance was good and hopefully we can continue on with our progression."
Â
The Mocs return home to host The Citadel Friday night at 7 p.m. at Finley Stadium. Admission is free and concessions will be available. Follow the action live at GoMocs.com.
