Arnold's Hat Trick Nets Win for Mocs in Double Overtime

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Chloe Arnold netted her first career hat trick in a 3-2 Southern Conference women's soccer win at The Citadel Friday afternoon.

The Mocs improve to 4-8-3 overall and 2-3-1 in SoCon play while the Bulldogs fall to 5-9 on the year and 0-6 against the conference.

"Big three points on the road," Chattanooga head coach Gavin McKinney said. "We had a great start to the match and scored a few great goals."

Arnold netted the first two goals of the game in a span of 3:17 to give Chattanooga a 2-0 lead throughout most of the first half. It would be another 96:58 until her third.

Chattanooga got the scoring started early with Arnold's first goal at the 6:53 mark of the match. Redshirt freshman Catherine Meyer fed her the ball and Arnold dribbled into the box, slipping the ball past the keeper on the left side.

Her second came in the 11th minute. Junior Masey Fox threw the ball from near midfield into Arnold who pushed it down the left side. She got around the Bulldog defense and fired it in from 10 yards out to make it a 2-0 advantage.

The Citadel's Cierra Skyers scored the next two goals to knot it up in the second half. Her first came at the 30:37 mark. She headed in a shot off a free kick to get The Citadel to within a goal at the half.

Her second was also off a free kick. The ball was sent into the box and knocked around by Chattanooga. Skyers picked it up in front of the goal and her shot knotted the match with 6:27 to play in regulation.

In the first overtime, the Mocs had the only shot but it didn't find the goal and the teams headed into a second extra period.

Arnold took all four of the Mocs' shots in double overtime. After her first was saved just over a minute into the extra time, the Bulldogs' lone shot was sent high over the net.

Arnold had two more chances with her first hitting off the post for the second time Friday. Her next was fired in from about 15 yards out on the left and snagged by Citadel's keeper Logan Leask who had seven saves in the match.

An injury timeout stopped the match for more than 25 minutes and saw a Bulldog player carted away with 6:06 to play. In the 108th minute, Arnold took a pass, dribbled the ball into the box and scored her third goal of the match and grab the win.

"You have to credit The Citadel for fighting their way back into the game," McKinney said. "We are delighted to have won it in the end. Chloe's hat-trick was fantastic."

The Mocs' last hat trick was in 2015 by Peyton McCollum at East Tennessee State.

Chattanooga outshot the Bulldogs 22-14 with a 12-9 shots on goal advantage. Arnold had a season-high 10 shots with five on goal and three goals. All four of Meyer's shots were on goal and Jordan Mueller had four shots. Keeper Melia Correa had six saves in the match.

Skyers scored both goals for The Citadel on four shots. Caroline Cashion, who left the game with an injury, and Hannah Roth each had three shots. Keeper Leask has seven saves in the match.

Chattanooga closes out its regular season road trip Sunday afternoon at Mercer. The match is set to tip off at 2:00 p.m. Follow the action live online at GoMocs.com.
