KIAWAH ISLAND---The Chattanooga Mocs women's golf team closed the Edwin Watts Kiawah Island Spring Classic with its best round of the event. The Mocs turned in a 1-over par 289 which ties for the low round of the season.

Freshman Maria Pineiro led with a 2-under 70. She carded a season-high five birdies to go with 10 pars and two bogeys. It was an eventful start to the round for the native of Barcelona, Spain.

After a bogey-par start beginning her day on the par 4 16th hole, Pineiro rattled of birdies at 18, 2, 3, 4 and 6 to get to -3. Eight straight pars followed with a bogey finish on 15 for her 70. That's one off her low 18 tally of 69 in the opening round of her collegiate career in September.

Junior Cristina Perez added a level-par 72. That was followed on the counting cards by Maddy McDanel and Megan Woods turning in 73 and 74, respectively. Monica San Juan's 75 was the drop score.

McDanel earned her first collegiate top 25. The freshman from Aliquippa, Pa., shot her low score in five events with a 4-over 220. She ended up tied for 24th. San Juan was next at 226, followed by Woods and Perez with 231s and Pineiro at 241.

Coastal Carolina claimed the win by one shot over host College of Charleston. The Chanticleers 2-under 286 gave it an 870 total. The Cougars shot 871 followed by Southern Miss in third at 873. CofC's Laura Fuenfstrueck entered the day as the leader and claimed medalist honors after her 2-under 70 polished off a three-day 8-under score of 208.

The Mocs are off until March 9-10 when they return to the Carolinas. They're entered in the River Landing Classic at River Landing Golf Club in Wallace, N.C., co-hosted by UNCW and East Carolina.
