Szymanski Goal Lifts Mocs Past ETSU 1-0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team posted a 1-0 win over East Tennessee State on a hot Sunday afternoon at Finley Stadium. The Mocs improve to 8-5-2 overall and 4-1-1 in Southern Conference action. The Bucs fall to 5-9 on the year and 3-2 against the league.

"Both teams battled hard," Chattanooga head coach Gavin McKinney said. "ETSU has had a really good season so far in SoCon play. They'll finish strong. They're a good team and they've got dangerous players.

"For us to hold them at bay and come away with a 1-nil victory is fantastic."

Sophomore Emily Szymanski, the ninth different UTC player to net a goal this season, scored the game winner in the final minute of the first half.

UTC's Catherine Meyer fired off a shot that was kept out of the net by ETSU keeper Lea Ann Cutshall. However, she was unable to wrap up the save and Lauren Dluzewski picked up the ball in a scramble in the box and push it to Szymanski who recorded her first collegiate goal with a shot into the left side.

"I mentioned it on Friday about how we preach team to them and be ready when your time comes," McKinney said. "Emily came in with about 10 or eight minutes to go in the first half and she scores a goal for us. It ends up being the game winner. It's her first goal here at UTC. Hopefully she's got a few more to come in that role for us."

Chattanooga outshot the Bucs 17-7 and edged ETSU 6-5 on shots on goal. Chloe Arnold led the Mocs with five shots and two on goal and Catherine Meyer fired four towards the net. Raffaella Giuliano had a team-best two for ETSU.

Freshman keeper Ashton Shields made five saves in the match as did Cutshall. Shields improves her record to 6-1-2 on the year.

The Mocs will face off against Samford Friday night in Chattanooga's home regular season finale. The Mocs will honor seniors Masey Fox and Molli Miller before the match.
