CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga battled three-time OVC champion Murray State to a double-overtime 2-2 draw. The Mocs are 3-3-1 overall and the Racers move to 4-1-1 on the year.
"I thought we created some chances in overtime," Chattanooga head coach
Gavin McKinney said. "As most games go, I think it kind of swayed as per who was getting the better of it. They had some nice spells in the game where they put us under pressure and getting some good chances. In turn, I thought we had a lot of good spells in the game where we moved the ball nicely and defended. We blocked shots when we needed to and some headers we won late on in the game. I think it shows we're progressing and getting closer.
Chattanooga got scoring from two new sources this season.
Catherine Meyer scored her first of the year to knot the match at 1-1 just before halftime and freshman
Maggie Shaw knocked in her first collegiate goal to give the Mocs a 2-1 lead.
Miyah Watford struck first for the Racers with a goal in the 10
th minute. She took a shot from the right side to the top corner on the far post for her team-best sixth of the year.
It would take almost half the period for the Mocs to even the score.
Masey Fox, on the right, eluded her defender and got her pass to Meyer who held off the Racer defender to pick up the pass and push it past the Murray State keeper in the 35
th minute.
The teams headed into the locker room tied 1-1 at intermission.
Shaw drove down the field on the left side and pushed her shot across the box into the net to give Chattanooga a 2-1 lead at the 56:37 mark of the match.
"Maggies goal was phenomenal," McKinney said. "She has that in her now. She's good 1-v-1. She's shifty and a great finish at the end for her.
"Cat Meyer, really good movement on her goal. She came inside and just got on the end of it, so jus a bit of a gritty goal for her.
"Nice to have more people on the score sheet."
Murray State outshot the Mocs 21-17 and Chattanooga edged the racers 12-11 on shots on goal. MSU's keeper Alex Steigerwald had 10 saves in 110 minutes in goal while Chattanooga's
Ashton Shields played the entire game in the net and made a career-high nine saves.
"Ashton has a great presence for a young keeper, McKinney said. "She made a few timely saves for us in the game. She came out and got a hand on a corner late on, too.
"The back four: Jo, Abby, Peyton, Shelby and Maggie were all fantastic in the way they battled for the ball."
Murray State tied the game in the 85
th minute with a goal off a corner kick. Abby Jones sent her corner to the far post. It was headed in by Cori Cain for her first goal of the season.
The Mocs will hit the road for a match in Clarksville, Tenn., to take on Austin Peay in another OVC matchup. The game is set to kick off at 2:00 p.m. Eastern time. Log onto GoMocs.com for live coverage of the event.
