Chattanooga Basketball Postgame Quotes
Chattanooga vs. Furman
McKenzie Arena – Chattanooga, Tenn.
Saturday – Jan. 19, 2018
Head coach Katie Burrows
Opening statement
"What a great start we had today. We talked about pushing the tempo, getting the ball up the floor quickly, looking for easy transition points. Today we looked great, especially in the first half, making the extra pass. I felt like we weren't forcing things. We were doing a good job of sharing the ball. The 20 assists, that shows it."
On the play of Lakelyn compared to the last game
"It's going to fluctuate because some teams are going to focus on her. To look at the rest of her stat line: 8 rebounds, 11 points, 2 assists, no turnovers, 2 blocked shots. She really played solid on both ends of the floor for us even though she wasn't getting as many touches"
What is the difference in the team now
"We talk about pride of playing on our court. We talk about pride in the sense that they beat us last year and wanting to get that back. I felt like we focused on the right people today and stopping them. Just getting more and more comfortable with who we are as an offensive team. We've not looked this good all season offensively. We are just moving it so much better and sharing it so much better and getting those wide open looks. Starting to knock them down and get a little more confident in ourselves.
"Winning is contageous. I think they are enjoying themselves on the floor. They look like they're having fun and I love that. I want their experience to be good. I'm thankful that these wins are building their confidence and they are enjoying it more."
Was this the game where it all came together
"Yes, this was a more complete game from the get go. The way we were reversing the ball and getting it to the wide open player. It was a beautiful thing. I enjoyed watching our game tonight. It was a lot of fun for me too."
On play of Abbey Cornelius
"My concern for her coming in is her strength factor. She's a freshman and still trying to grow in that area. [Furman's Celena] Taborn is a force. She leads them, scoring-wise, in conference play. I used Abbey when they went undersized because I feel like she can defend on the perimeter as well as inside. She is very disciplined. She's very coachable. She listens when Coach [Jon] tells her what to do. She immediately goes and does it. I have a lot of confidence in her when she goes in there.
"I was thankful that she was able to connect. She was in the right spot and her teammates did a good job of attacking in the right spots to get her the open looks. She got a couple of rebounds for a put back. I was very proud of her effort."
On Davidson's effect after not playing first half
"Even though I stressed to them - don't relax - we knew, we sensed this was going to happen. She's dressed, they're going to play her at some point. We figured it was going to be in the second half. We stressed at the half that. She's going to be more of a scoring presence for them. Make sure to take that away. Our communication was very poor. Once we finally started to settle, we did a much better job. She's a good player. She's a spark of energy for them. They feed off her. When she gets hot, they get hot."
Bria Dial, sophomore
On the game plan
"Just to have a good start. Usually we have a hard time starting off the game. So we're just trying to figure out what to do to start good. Go ahead and hit them in the mouth from the jump."
On Furman without Davidson in the first half
"I think we kind of relaxed a little bit. We didn't expect her to come out like that so I feel like we relaxed on defense. We stopped doing the fundamental things we were told to from the jump because we didn't know she was not going to start."
Abbey Cornelius, freshman
On her play in the game
"It feels really good to get to finally get to do what I've done in high school and make a difference for the team."
On Eboni Williams leaving late in the game
"We knew we had to finish, keep playing fundamental, getting rebounds and pushing the ball. Getting what we wanted."
