Soccer Ties Shutout Record at The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The Chattanooga women's soccer team earned a record-tying eighth shutout with a 2-0 win over The Citadel Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference action at the Washington Light Infantry Field. The Mocs improve to 8-4-3 on the year and 3-2-1 in league action. The Citadel falls to 5-6-2 overall and 1-4 against the SoCon.

The Mocs matched a school record eight shutouts set in 2003 and their eight wins is tied for fourth most in a season for Chattanooga.

Chattanooga got on the board early with freshman Mackenzie Smith scoring her first collegiate goal. She sent a pass to the right to Chloe Arnold who passed it right back to the forward. Smith had a couple of touches on the ball before sending a shot off her left foot from outside the 18-yard box and over the reach of the Bulldogs' keeper for the score.

It would be toward the end of the game before the Mocs found the net again. Senior Bailey Gale chased the ball down the right side and sent a pass from the wing to the middle to Samantha Shaw. Shaw, with her back to the net, passed the ball along to the left side where a charging Emily Szymanski chipped it over the keeper and into the upper left corner.

Ashton Shields recorded her fifth shutout of the season and the 11th of her career. She made two saves in the match on five shots by The Citadel. The Mocs had 12 shots in the match with three on goal. Bulldog keeper Brie Sikes had just one save. Smith and Osa Iyare had three shots each and Samantha Shaw had a pair.

Chattanooga will return home to host VMI Friday, October 18 at the UTC Sports Complex at 6:00 p.m. The Mocs will host Breast Cancer Awareness Night and encourage fans to wear pink.

Prior to the match, the Mocs will also recognize its seniors Bailey Gale, Jordan Mueller and Anna Rogers. Please come early for the prematch ceremony. Admission is free and concessions will be available.
