Soccer Falls to UNCG in Home Finale

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Chattanooga junior Chloe Arnold tapped in a shot for the Mocs to even the match against UNCG in Southern Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at the UTC Sports Complex, but it wouldn't be enough for Chattanooga who fell 2-1 to the Spartans in the home slate finale.

"We released Shelby off the right," Chattanooga head coach Gavin McKinney said. "She was crossing it and it ends up going off the bar. Chloe was at the back post and tapped it in for us. Unfortunately we didn't create more opportunities."

Bailey Gale picked up the ball in the middle above the box and turned to find Shelby Hash down the right side. She dribbled toward the end line to get around her defender and sent a shot up that hit off the crossbar and over to the far post. Arnold came in on the left and tapped it into the bottom left corner to tie the match 1-1 in the 25th minute.

Cienna Rideout scored both goals for the Spartans. Her first came in the 13th minute and was unassisted. Her second goal, fifth of the season, came early in the second half on an assist by Kaley Tucker to make it 2-1 in the 57th minute. That score would stand.

UNCG outshot Chattanooga 13-7 and edged the Mocs 6-5 on shots on goal. UTC keeper Ashton Shields had four saves as did Spartan keeper Abby Buchholz.  Rideout led all with five shots and Arnold led the Mocs with three shots, all on goal.

Chattanooga drops to 9-5-3 on the year and 4-3-1 in league play, dropping to fifth in the SoCon standings. The Spartans improve to 8-7-1 overall and 5-2 against the conference. UTC has just one game remaining in the season next Sunday at Samford.

The Southern Conference Championship bracket will be released following all games on Sunday. The top six teams will receive a first-round bye. The team seeded seventh will host the #10 seeded team and No. 8 will host No. 9 in the opening round on October 30. The top four teams will then host second round games.
