Postgame Quotes vs. Purdue

Chattanooga Basketball Postgame Notes
Purdue at Chattanooga
McKenzie Arena – Chattanooga, Tenn.
Thursday – Nov. 14, 2019

UTC Head Coach Katie Burrows
Opening thoughts on the game:
"You have to put the ball in the hole and you have to take care of the ball.  Do we talk strategy and mixing up defenses?  No, we need to take care of the ball.  If we take care of the ball, then we don't give up 26 points off of 21 turnovers.  That is the key.

"Transition defense was a huge issue for us tonight because we gave up 21 turnovers.  You can't have basket coverage when you turn the ball over at the top of the key.  We are not expecting it so we don't get back to protect the basket.  It is a whole vicious cycle.  It starts with valuing the ball and not turning it over 21 times.

"From there, moving the ball offensively like we did Monday night.  Moving it around the horn, getting paint touches, getting our feet set.  Our spacing was poor.  We did not move the ball.  It was very stagnant early on.  I thought we did a better job in the second half.  We did a better job overall in the second half, period."

What do you think of your team's work on the offensive glass:
"We better be good offensive rebounders if we are going to shoot it that poorly.  Thankful that we did at least try to give ourselves second opportunities and third opportunities.  It is not the effort.  It wasn't the effort against Hampton.  It is just putting it all together and channeling that into controlled effort, and keeping the same principles that we talk about every single day, both offensively and defensively."

On preparing for Cincinnati and Louisville:
"We have to keep on plugging.  We watch a lot of film and show them various ways that we can improve on both ends of the floor and try to show them tendencies for things."

Nakeia Burks – Sr.-G
On what was said during halftime with such a big deficit to overcome:
"Really just scoring and getting stops.  We knew that we were obviously down by a lot, but we fight and that is what we do.  We just couldn't finish tonight."

On the play of Eboni Williams:
"Very proud.  I know that we can both say that.  With our team, we don't have to coach effort.  I think that is the most important thing.  Moving forward, we just have to finish.  Effort-wise we are fine.  None of the coaches have to coach that.  That is what is going to keep us positive."

Lakelyn Boudin – Sr.-G
On what was said after the game:
"Learn and grow from it, really.  We have to cut down on turnovers and details have to be our focus moving forward. Little details and we will see improvements."

Purdue Head Coach Sharon Versyp
On coming our and being aggressive:
"That is what we needed to do.  We always taking about initiating on offense and defense, and I thought we did that.  We went right down low to Ae'Rianna Harris, she had 10 points in the first quarter, trying to establish that game.  That is what we have to do in order for us to be successful as we continue.  I just like how hard our kids played.  We played hard every second."

On what to improve up moving forward:
"We can't have droughts on offense like we came out in the third quarter.  We had eight transition opportunities and we didn't capitalize on any of those.  We have to … as we say … put the pedal to the metal and keep going and score the ball better.
"We can't go two minutes or three minutes and only score six points, that is unacceptable.  We have to be better there and find better shots.

"We didn't get to the foul line.  We fouled 14 times and they fouled seven, that was a bit different for us.  We usually get to the foul line, and we get probably close to 20 points from the foul line."

On sharing the ball:
"That is what we work on.  I am not totally pleased with the turnovers.  We want to be able to share the basketball.  We are not a one-one -one team. When we share the ball we are better.  If we can have 4-5 players in double figures then … they can't just shut down one player.

On the play of UTC to start the second half:
"They came out and continued to play hard.  I have a lot of respect for them.  They ran out and were active hands."
