Head coach Katie Burrows
Opening statement
"Well, you never want it to end, obviously. Unfortunately, we came out hot last night and we did not today and they did. When you've got a first-quarter deficit where they're shooting 70 percent and we're shooting 27 percent, that's a killer. And so to dig out of that hole made it very difficult for us. We did dig out of that hole there in the middle of the fourth quarter. We tied it up in the fourth quarter with an and-1 from Abbey (Cornelius). But with them shooting it so well and giving up 11 offensive rebounds and giving them that many more opportunities just made it tough for us to come back and stay out of that hole. Overall, I was not displeased with our effort. Our kids were gutting it out. I was telling Lakelyn (Bouldin) and Brooke (Burns) that we are still really young. Nine of our 14 are freshman and sophomores so you were going to make mistakes. And the kids played through those mistakes, they still kept battling. We could have just rolled over and died today. But these kids don't know how to. Very, very pleased with the fact that they kept fighting. We're down but not out. We'll be back next year."
On the rally back into the game
"There's nothing that I do specifically, I just keep coaching them. They've got the fight and the will within them to continue just to fight, especially with all the things stacked up against us. And really the killer for us was that we missed a lot of bunnies today. And no, we did not shoot the 3-point shots well but when you go back and look at film, there were several that we could've hit within the paint and we do normally. But that just didn't go our way this evening. But I don't have to dig it out of them. There was probably two games this season that I felt like I had to actually coach effort. That's not something I've felt I had to do much of at all."
On their expectations for next year
"The expectation is that, yes, we'll be a year older and we'll have some new bodies coming in that will allow us to shift some positions. Brooke (Burns) had to take over the role of point guard. That's not necessarily why we recruited Brooke or even where she's most comfortable being, but she took it on and we're super proud of that, by the way. These are two kids (
Lakelyn Bouldin) you'd rather have running off screens and getting them open rather than have them to be the distributors. So were looking forward to that and being able to shift some things around."
Sophomore guard Brooke Burns
On staying in the game when trailing
"Honestly, I don't even look at the scoreboard. Like when they get up like that I just keep playing as if nothing happened. We just kept trying to move the ball and eventually in the second we started to get the offense going a little bit. But we did a good job of penetrating and getting those good looks; we just didn't connect like we wanted."
On their expectations for next year
"Just to remember this feeling and come back and win it next year."
Junior guard Lakelyn Bouldin
On the energy level
"Like coach said, they came out hitting a lot more than we did. We got some fastbreak points and so we just worked and made our defense a little better. But with a big lead like that, we just had to keep chipping away."
On their expectations for next year
"Just to be better than we were this year."
