HILTON HEAD---Monica San Juan is tied for first leading the Chattanooga Mocs women's golf team into third after the opening 18 at the Southern Conference Championships. The ladies posted 301 which is five shots behind Furman in first and three shy of second-place Mercer.
San Juan's 71 was one of three under-par rounds at a stingy Moss Creek South Course. Her total was matched by Haylee Harford (Furman) and Hee Ying Loy (ETSU). Mercer's Mary Janiga is fourth with an even-par 72.
Rheagan Hall is tied for ninth with 75. She and San Juan were joined by Esme Hamilton (76) and Kirsty Beckwith (79) on the counting cards. Dorota Zalewska had the drop score with 80.
San Juan was a model of consistency over her first 16 holes. Just a bogey on the par 5 fourth marred 15 pars. Her consistent play off the tee and fairway reached the green. She drained birdie putts on 17 and 18 to cap off a strong opening round.
ETSU sits in fourth-place two behind Chattanooga's 301. UNCG (308) is fifth followed by Samford (313), Wofford (317), The Citadel (333) and Western Carolina (341).
The Mocs are back on the tee at 9:40 a.m., paired with Furman and Mercer. Links to today's results, live scoring and parings are above.
