San Juan Completes Collegiate Career at NCAA Championships Auburn Site

Senior Monica San Juan and Coach Colette Murray shared a moment after the Spaniard completed her final 18 as a Chattanooga Moc.

OPELIKA, Ala.---Chattanooga Mocs senior Monica San Juan has had quite a ride over the last 25 days. She captured her first collegiate victory winning the Southern Conference Championship in April and now completing her career with her first NCAA postseason appearance.
San Juan closed with a 3-under 75. That gave her a three-day total of 230. It wasn't the week she was looking for, but she made the most of the experience.
"It was good," San Juan reflected. "Preparing for this tournament, I was playing really well and feeling really good about my game. Then I came here, and my swing wasn't quite together so I wasn't able to play as I was expecting to play.
"I shot under par every day preparing to come here and feeling really comfortable hitting good shots and holing good putts. I did everything I could and enjoyed today's round."
It was tough sledding to start. Opening on the 10th, she bogeyed 11, 12, 14 and 18 to turn at 4 over. Another bogey on three pushed it to 5 over, but San Juan still had a little magic left.
She drained a birdie putt on six and narrowly missed one on seven. San Juan took advantage of the par 5 eighth for her second birdie of the nine. She almost drained a lengthy putt on the final hole for another ending with 75. That flurry provided a lasting memory for San Juan.
"It's definitely a bitter taste (overall performance)," she added. "It's definitely special the way I finished. It's better finishing out the round with a few birdies coming in to have that as my memory of the week here."
Vanderbilt, Florida State, Duke, Virginia, Auburn and Tennessee earned the six team spots in the NCAA Championships finals site at the Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. Linette Holmslykke (Murray State), Virunpat Olankitkunchai (Maryland) and Angelica Moresco (Alabama) claimed the three individual berths from non-advancing teams.
