Senior Maddy McDanel led the Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team shooting E over the opening 36 holes at the Mercedes-Benz Championships.

KNOXVILLE---The Chattanooga Mocs women's golf team's start to the 2019-20 mirrored the weather Monday at Cherokee Country Club. The Mocs shot twin 289s for a 10-over 578 total standing fifth in the Mercedes-Benz Championships.

Senior Maddy McDanel leads the way for her squad with even-par 71s on both cards. That puts her in a tie for 10th, three ahead of teammate Rheagan Hall tied for 20th with 145 who posted 72 in the morning and 73 in a sizzling afternoon round.

Dorota Zalewska registered the low UTC 18 with 1-under 70 in the morning. She tallied 148 today which is one clear of Esme Hamilton. Kirsty Beckwith is another stroke behind at 150, while Michaela Kulhankova shot 155.

The counting cards turned in 13 birdies over the opening 18, 11 in the heat of the day for round two. The key to round two was cutting scores higher than bogey from three in the AM to just one. There's more in the notes below, but the 578 total is the best opening 36 holes in school history.

Kent State leads with 555, four ahead of Charlotte with 559. LSU (576) is third followed closely by Maryland (577) and Chattanooga (578). Tulane (584), Augusta (585), Tennessee (589), Mercer (593) and Middle Tennessee (595) round out the top 10. Kent's Pimnipa Panthong is the individual leader at 6 under (136).

Today's 36-hole total of 578 is the best start to the season in school history ahead of 585 in the first 36 holes of the program's modern era in 2007 Chris Banister Gamecock Classic. 289 is one higher than the top opening 18 which came in the 2007 and 2008 Banister Gamecock events.
289 (+5) matches the program's best number at the Mercedes-Benz Championships. The Mocs also turned in 289 in 2010 (final round E at Holston Hills) and 2016 (second).
Sophomore Dorota Zalewska record her first par or better card with a 1-under 70 over the opening 18. The team's high counter was 76 in the first round and 73 in the second.
