Fall 2020 GPA

Mocs Continue to Impress With 3.309 GPA

The 2020 fall semester will go down in history as a most unusual one at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.  The COVID-19 pandemic definitely made an impact on the University, but one thing that did not change was the academic success of the Mocs student-athletes.  This group finished the term with a 3.309 overall grade-point-average, the second-highest mark in school history.

“Our students once again did an outstanding job in the classroom in a very trying environment,” stated UTC Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Mark Wharton.  “They maintained a high-level of focus and commitment to academics, despite the uncertainty surrounding their personal and athletic lives during this pandemic.”

UTC’s 3.309 overall GPA only trails the 3.421 set in the spring where there was an unlimited pass/fail option for all UTC students.  That choice was not available in the fall, but many program still managed to reach new heights.

Women’s golf led the way, posting a 3.87 team GPA.  It is the highest mark on record for any program at UTC, topping the 3.85 set by women's cross country in the spring of 2014 and equaled by men's cross country in the spring of 2018.  Head coach Colette Murray’s group also tied a program record with four student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA.

“I would also like to again praise our academic support staff for their efforts and flexibility during the fall semester,” added Wharton.  “They took changes and adjustments in stride and helped keep our students focused on their main goal of success in the classroom.”

Overall, UTC tied a school record with 14 teams scoring a 3.0 GPA or higher in the fall.  The Mocs also set new highs with 206 (65% of all student-athletes) on the Dean's List (3.2 GPA) and 240 (76% of all student-athletes) on the A.D. Honor Roll (3.0 GPA).

Football set a program record with 66 on the A.D. Honor Roll, while soccer set a program record with 26 on the Dean's List. For more information on other top accomplishments, see the Academic Notes section below.

“It is important to also note the job of the faculty and staff at the University,” continued Wharton. “Moving so many classes to an online environment, while maintaining a high-level of instruction, was no easy task. By all accounts they did a tremendous job providing a quality learning environment for all students at UTC.”
