Overall thoughts after today's tough loss to WCU.
"They wanted it more than we did. We came out and lacked fire, lacked energy. I don't have an answer for that. I'm not in their minds and not in their bodies. I asked them that questions, but of course it's kind of rhetorical and there's not a real answer. I just challenged them a little bit and tried to make them understand, after we played so well Thursday and flipped a switch, we come out and turned that switch off. That whole first half we were just glazed. We only gave up 30 points, it wasn't like we were totally breaking down defensively. That was frustrating. When you're not shooting the ball, you can't have just one coverage and I think that's been affecting us."
Â
On the team's comeback efforts.
"I told you guys, my kids are never going to quit. We just decided to amp it up a little bit too late. It makes you think if we should have moved to that press a little sooner. They really gave a great effort in the second half. We had so many missed layups and I don't know if that's mechanical or what, but that hurt us."
Â
On early turnovers leading to a deficit.
"I would say early on, we had a couple travel calls because we were playing too fast. Sometimes that happens. A lot of it was trying to force passes that weren't there or force a play that wasn't there. Sometimes our spacing on the floor was bad. When we spread the floor and made them guard us out there, we were able to get to the rim and get fouled. Free throws kept us in the game because we did make those. It's just all unfortunate."
Â
On what lessons can be learned and applied moving forward.
"You can't take breaks. You can't take a single second off. They're going to be anxious to get back on the court [Furman after loss to Mercer today] and they are who we see next. That's going to be a battle, but being on the road is going to be tough because we haven't really shot the ball well on the road. A positive is that we are making our free throws. We just have to revaluate our hearts and our minds, and are we going to make a stride in these last five games."
Eboni Williams, So.-F
On what worked to make the offense start clicking.
"We realized that we needed to keep together. We weren't on the same page and not communicating well. We started clicking when we figured that out. We just weren't communicating well at all."
Â
On WCU's efforts today and what needed to improve.
"They came out and played hard. They kind of felt like they were the underdog and they showed it. We should have started attacking to get other people open. We needed some type of offense to get going, we were just standing around."
Â
On biggest takeaway from today's loss.
"Never take anyone for granted and always think that you're two steps behind. We have to play hard at all times."
Bria Dial, Jr.-F
On overall thoughts after today's tough loss and comeback efforts.
"We didn't get close enough, so it is what it is. I don't feel well about everything that happened. We had to sit down and say, "let's get this together". We're better and bigger than this."
Â
On the biggest factor that led to a slow first half.
"They wanted it more than us and it was evident. It was the fact that we couldn't keep anyone in front of us. It was a lack of communication and a lack of playing defense."
Â
On moving forward.Â
"I feel like we can't just dwell on this. We can do it, we can't sit back and dwell on it. It's a tough loss but it will help us."
