Mocs Score 5-2 Win Over Lee

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the year with a 5-2 win over Lee University today.  The Mocs dropped the doubles point, but won five of six singles to take the win against the Flames.

Lee, a member of the NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference, came out hot in doubles action.  Chattanooga took the first match when freshman Grace Anne Dunavant and junior Emma Van Hee posted a 6-2 win over Dana Moreno and Larissa Wieser at No. 3.  The Flames responded with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to grab the 1-0 lead.

Singles was tight early, but Van Hee tied the team score with a (6-4, 6-0) win over Lisa Kirr.  Sophomore Caroline Gibbens gave UTC the lead with her win over Hayden Smith (6-1, 6-1) at No. 6.

Junior Bogdana Zaporozhets scored a straight-sets win over Moreno (6-2, 6-2) at No. 5, but the Flames came back with a win at No. 3.  Carley Sickinger defeated UTC freshman Wilma Bergqvist (6-2, 6-4) to close the team score to 3-2.

Sophomore Polina Goloputova clinched the win for the Mocs with a win at No. 4 over Sierra Donaldson [6-4, 7-6 (5)].  Freshman Jessie Young closed out the dual at No. 1, downing Michaela Belen Maiz [6-4, 7-6 (2)].

Up next for the Mocs are two home matches next weekend.  UTC hosts UNC Asheville on Saturday, Feb. 6, followed by a Sunday dual against Presbyterian.
