Mocs Post 5-2 Win Over Western Kentucky

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team scored a 5-2 win over Western Kentucky tonight.  The Mocs lost the doubles point but took five of six singles to improve to 5-0 on the year.  The Hilltoppers fell to 1-5 overall.

Doubles was a back-and-forth affair with WKU opening with a 6-0 win at No. 2.  The Mocs were up 4-1 at No. 1 and down 1-4 at No. 3.  Freshmen Callie Billman and Wilma Berqgvist battled back to take the No. 3 match 7-5.

Unfortunately for the Mocs, Western Kentucky's Cora-Lynn vonDungern and Lisa Friess also flipped the No. 1 match.  They clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over junior Emma Van Hee and freshman Jessie Young.

Young tied up the score with a (6-0, 6-1) win over vonDungern at No. 1. That was followed by junior Bogdana Zaporozhets straight-sets win over Friess (6-4, 6-2) at No. 4.  UTC built a 3-1 lead when sophomore Caroline Gibbens carded a (7-5, 6-0) win over Alexis Kramer at No. 6.

The last three matches were tight throughout, with Van Hee, Berqgvist and sophomore Polina Golputova all locked in three-setters.  Van Hee won the first set, but lost the second at No. 2, while Berqgvist lost the first in a tiebreaker and won the second at No. 5.

Both Mocs were down in their third sets when Goloputova clinched the team win at No. 3.  She had lost the first set 6-2 but won the second 6-1.  She then took the third in a tiebreaker [7-6 (4)].

Van Hee came back in her match against Laura Bernardos to win (6-0, 3-6, 7-5).  Berqgvist eventually dropped her marathon to Lauren Joch (7-6 (4), 0-6, 6-1).

Up next for the Mocs is a Sunday dual against Austin Peay.  First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) at McCallie's Strang-Voges Tennis Center.  Links for live scoring and McCallie's Playsight video are available on the women's tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com.
