The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 match at Presbyterian today. It was the third match in five days for the Mocs who are coming off a three-week COVID-19 shutdown.
The Mocs dropped the doubles point and won three of six singles to fall to 0-5 overall. Presbyterian improved to 2-0 with the win.
"We survived three matches in five days after the COVID shutdown," stated head coach
Chuck Merzbacher. "Guys hung in there, and I'm proud of them."
Presbyterian won No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches 6-0 and were up 4-2 at No. 2 when they clinched the point. They went up 2-0 with a win at No. 3, but sophomore
Kerim Hyatt got on the board with a (6-2, 6-4) win over Sebastian Dominguez at No. 3.
Presbyterian upped its lead to 3-1 with a win at No. 4, but sophomore
Tomas Rodriguez responded with a (7-5, 6-4) win over Max Benson at No. 1. The Blue Hose clinched the win with a three-set victory at No. 6 before senior
Turner Voges completed his three-set victory at No. 2.
"This is always a tough match on the road and getting used to the courts, so doubles struggled," added Merzbacher. "We roared back by winning four first sets in singles and really overall we played very solid in singles. I'm seeing a lot of positives and elements that will be there for us down the stretch."
Up next for the Mocs is a home match against UAB on Friday, March 5, at 2:30 p.m. at the UTC Tennis Center. Be sure to check the men's tennis schedule page for a link to live scoring for that one.
