Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Anne Wehunt

Golden Goal Lifts Mocs Past ETSU

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- It may not have been a pretty goal, but it was enough to do the job. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team beat ETSU 2-1 in the second overtime Friday evening at the UTC Sports Complex in Southern Conference action.

"We worked the ball into a great area and got a little bit of luck there at the end," Mocs' head coach Gavin McKinney said.

The game winner came from Kendra Mueller who bumped a pass toward the ETSU goal. It rolled through the defense and into the net to give the Mocs a sudden victory.

"It's a big result," McKinney said. "Every game in our league is going to be a battle, a tough game. To come away with three points tonight, we're delighted. There was great desire for the girls to come from 1-Nil down and find a way to win."

ETSU struck first with a goal early in the second half.

In the 53rd minute, the Bucs' Kendall King took a free kick from deep on the right side near midfield. She served it in toward the box and Jocelyn Nehls picked up the ball surrounded by Chattanooga defenders. She turned to her right and sent the quick shot off her left foot past a diving Chattanooga keeper Ashton Shields.

The Mocs defense held ETSU scoreless the rest of the way and forced overtime with a goal in the 79th minute.

"Samantha's ball into Chloe was phenomenal," McKinney said. "What a great finish."

Samantha Shaw picked up the ball just before midfield and dribbled along the right side. In front of the Chattanooga bench, she stopped to serve up a pass into the box where Chloe Arnold caught it with her right foot just outside the six-yard box and sending it into the bottom of the net under the Bucs' keeper, knotting the score at 1-1.

Neither team got off a shot in the first overtime but the Mocs' lone shot in the second was enough to get the win.

Chattanooga improve to 2-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league play while the Bucs fall to 1-3-1 on the year and 1-1-1 against the SoCon.

"I thought ETSU played a really good match," McKinney said.

Chattanooga remains at home to host Western Carolina Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Follow all the action online at GoMocs.com.
