Mocs Down UNCG 6-1

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team snapped a four-march slide with a 6-1 win over UNCG today.  The Mocs won the doubles point and five of six singles matches to improve to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in Southern Conference action. The loss dropped the Spartans to 5-7 on the year and 1-5 in league play.

Freshman Jessie Young led the way with the clinching wins in singles and doubles.  Freshmen Wilma Berqgvist and Callie Billman opened with a 6-4 win over Emily Ory and Tayah Cross at No. 3.   

UNCG evened doubles play with a win at No. 1.  Young and junior Bogdana Zaporozhets cliched the opening point with their 6-3 win over Juliana Craft and Brianna Gomez at No. 2.  The Mocs' second duo improved to a team-best 16-9 overall and 9-6 in the No. 2 spot.

The Mocs ran out to a 3-0 lead with wins at No. 3 and No. 4.  Junior Polina Goloputova evened her spring record at 7-7 with a (6-1, 6-3) win over Hanna Giddings at No. 3, while Zaporozhets defeated Ory (6-1, 6-3) at No. 4. 

The Spartans got on the board at No. 5 before Young took the deciding point at No. 1.  She snapped an eight-match skid with a three-set win over Gomez (7-5, 1-6, 6-4). 

Sophomore Caroline Gibbens won her match at No. 6 in three sets against Eugenia Camacho (6-3, 4-6, 6-2), while junior Emma Van Hee improved to 13-4 at No. 2 with a three-set win over Sophia Adams [4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4)].

Up next for the Mocs is the regular season finale against Samford on Saturday, April 18.  First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) at the UTC Tennis Center.
