CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs wrestling program has an amazing tradition of excellence. There is no program in the south boasting the hardware standard that the 2022-23 edition gets to strive toward. It's a hungry group with a lot of promise and potential, but also with plenty of mat cred.
  • 17 Southern Conference Regular Season Titles
  • 29 Southern Conference Tournament Titles
  • 152 SoCon Individual Champions
  • 199 NCAA DI Qualifiers

That last number looks to take an upturn this season. There are five on the 2022-23 roster who have wrestled on the biggest stage. Two return from last year's squad in Brayden Palmer (133) and Matthew Waddell (197). It was Palmer's first trip and the third in a row (2020-22) for Waddell.

There are three new to this year's roster who also competed at nationals in their career. Heavyweight Logan Andrew redshirted last season after qualifying in 2021 at 197. Transfers Rocky Jordan (174-Ohio State) and Logan Ashton (125-Stanford) look to return there as well in their first campaign in the Scenic City.

Half of the potential starting lineup has qualified for nationals. The other half is jam packed with potential to do the same. It's a recipe that excites Coach Kyle Ruschell.

"There's a lot of buzz around this team," Ruschell shared. "And to be honest, it's the most exciting lineup we've put together since I've been here. These guys are fully bought in, ready to work and expecting to win.

"It's going to be a fun season!"

It's nothing new to have that level of success on a Mocs squad. The top 3 seasons by number of NCAA Qualifiers at the end of the year:
9 – 2007
8 – 2008
7 – 1983, 1988, 2006 & 2015

The season officially begins on November 5 in Jacksonville, Fla. The Battle in the River City features matches against Wisconsin, Buffalo and Little Rock. The first home match is Dec. 10 when the Iowa Hawkeyes come to the Scenic City. It is part of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team in McKenzie Arena with the wrestlers taking over in prime time.
