HEAD COACH SHAWN POPPIE
Opening Statement
"First and foremost, thanks again for coming out and showing support. Thanks for the fans. We look forward to as we get better, hopefully more and more people will come into McKenzie. We appreciate the support.
Â
"I'm glad I'm able to stand her and celebrate a win while we have a lot of work to do. I thought King competed their butts off, gave it a valiant effort, tried to mix in a lot of defenses. They did a lot of things to bother us. A lot of room for improvement on our end. I love winning, working and getting better while we win."
Â
On the energy and effort
"I did not [like the energy] but it started with me. To be honest, I apologized to my team. The week we'd had had been a long week. I'm trying to relinquish some of that leadership with my energy to where it's got to come from them and not looking to me every time for energy. I'm gonna bring it every day, but I thought I'd let them try to lead us in that category. We're not ready for it, I learned and that's ok."
Â
On the team effort and most getting to play
"I thought it was good to get dang near everybody on our roster, I think everybody but Lamiah [Walker] had an opportunity to get out there, which is good. We've kinda went through some stretches there with some DNPs in certain positions. It gave them an opportunity. I thought that Takia [Davis] had a solid nine-and-a-half minutes when she came in. We're still scrambling for another wing and it's kinda wild because it's the one where we have the most people at that position. Some of it's a comfort thing. You gotta get some minutes under their belt, so it was nice to get a bunch of bodies out there. They've got some film to watch and some game experience. We're gonna need more off that bench moving forward."
Â
On Raven improving and her rebounding
"Raven has done a heck of a job, especially this last week in general rebounding the ball. It would have been nice for her to make a free throw or a couple more layups there to get a double-double. She'd been flirting with one and then got one up at Asheville. She's a worker, she's all in. From where she came from to where she is now is pretty remarkable. I'm super excited if she stays the path, she can be a pretty good player for us."
Â
On the next six games being on the road
"We better become some road warriors soon. Day trip to Atlanta next Wednesday. We'll head down to Alabama on Friday. Some of them are a little bit closer. We get into Ohio and Marshall will be a long trip but they're together. We'll stay on the road the whole time. North Alabama's in the mix there somewhere. I think it's spread out."
