CHATTANOOGA---Homecoming Weekend for the next Chattanooga Mocs football season is set. Put it in pen and make plans accordingly. Homecoming 2022 is the North Alabama game on September 17 with a kickoff time currently planned for 6 p.m.

It's just the sixth time playing a non-Southern Conference opponent for Homecoming since the Mocs moved to the league in 1977. The first five came from 1977-85 and again in 2008. The Sept. 17 date is the second-earliest in school history and just fifth in September with all five played over the last 13 Homecoming weekends.

"We play them when they're scheduled," Coach Rusty Wright smiled. "There's a lot of planning involved between our athletics staff, university staff and the alumni office. We're happy to see the date released allowing all of our alumni to plan a great weekend back home in Chattanooga."

The Mocs are 60-28-3 all-time when the alums flood back to campus, and the current student organizations flourish in a week of events and anticipation around a special weekend. That's a .676 winning percentage, 2-0 in the Wright era.

It's not the only addition/change to the schedule. The following week's game at Illinois is shifting to Thursday night, Sept. 22, to accommodate prime time national television opportunities with time and network to be announced at a later date.

The Homecoming announcement is a timely release with basketball's Legends Weekend on tap this week. The athletics department alternates hoops alumni reunions each season between the men's and women's programs with this year's landing on the men's side with a special anniversary in mind.

It's the 25th anniversary of the 1997 Sweet 16 team that took the country by storm. Members and coaches from that tight-knit group are coming back along with former student-athletes from various eras spanning SoCon Championship squad members from 1981-2016. The basketball Mocs could clinch their 12th regular season crown this week which would tie the league record.

It starts with Thursday's visit by UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m., with ceremonies planned for Saturday's 4 p.m., start against VMI. The Keydets are one of two programs, Furman the other, with remaining hopes of sharing this year's regular season title.

The Mocs magic number is one with a win or Furman loss to clinch no worse than tie for the title and the No. 1 seed in the Southern Conference Championship March 3-7 in Asheville, N.C., at the Harrah's Cherokee Center. Tickets are available online on GoMocs.com, by phone at 266-MOCS (6627) and on the Go Mocs app found wherever the finest apps are downloaded.
