Cooper Earns SoCon Honor with Winning Weekend

Chattanooga Mocs sophomore Makenzie Cooper tees off en route to medalist honors at the Evie Odom Invitational leading to Southern Conference weekly award.

CHATTANOOGA---Chattanooga Mocs sophomore Makenzie Cooper is Southern Conference Golfer of the Week for competition between Oct. 4-10. It is Cooper's first such award coming off her first collegiate win.
Cooper set a new school record for 54-hole score with her 7-under 203. That included steady cards of 68, 68 and 67 at Princess Anne Country Club. It bested Dorota Zalewska's 204 winning the NCAA Raleigh Regionals in May. Zalewska still owns the mark vs par at 12 under.
"Great news," Coach Colette Murray said. "Well deserved, and we're delighted to add this accolade to her great week."
The win at the Evie Odom Invitational came against an impressive field. It featured one top 20 (No. 16 UCF) and 11 total in the top 100 including the Mocs, then at No. 77 per Golfstat. Cooper led the team to wins over Notre Dame, Indiana, Missouri, Penn State, Furman, host Old Dominion and College of Charleston among others.
She posted a career-high 14 birdies which led the field. She also paced t on the par 3s at 3 under and tied for the lead on the par 4s (-5). Cooper played 87.0 percent of her holes, 47 of 54, par or better.
The last Moc to capture the honor was Zalewska last October. It is the 31st all-time for the program. The ladies are back in action Sunday-Tuesday in Knoxville at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate. They tackle Cherokee Country Club in the 3-day, 54-hole event.
