Six Soccer Student-Athletes Named Academic All-District

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Six Chattanooga soccer student-athletes were named Academic All-District on Tuesday afternoon. Caroline Ekern, Sylvie Keck, Zoey Mize, Hannah Opie, Mackenzie Smith and Kelly Tuerff all earned recognition from the College Sports Communicators.
 
To be named Academic All-District, student-athletes must possess a 3.4 cumulative grade-point average and compete in at least 90 percent of matches or start in at least 66 percent of contests.
 
Caroline Ekern is majoring in marketing and has a 4.0 GPA. The Knoxville, Tenn., sophomore is a member of the Chattanooga Dean's List and Athletics Director's Honor Roll. She earned a spot on the Southern Conference Honor Roll and was a recipient of the SoCon Commissioner's Medal for Academics. Ekern started 17 games last season in goal, missing one due to injury. She won eight games with four shutouts, recorded a 1.29 goals-against average and a .756 save percentage.
 
Sylvie Keck, a junior from Nashville, Tenn., is secondary education, English major. She is a recipient of the Southern Conference Commissioner's Medal for Academics and was named to the league's Honor Roll and 2022 Fall All-Academic Team. She is a member of the Chattanooga Dean's List and Athletics Director's Honor Roll. Keck started all 18 games in defense. She played every minute in 17 games including double-overtime against Samford in the SoCon playoffs.
 
Zoey Mize, a sophomore from Ooltewah, Tenn., is a management major. She was named to the Dean's List and Athletics Director's Honor Roll and the SoCon Honor Roll. She started all 18 games at midfield. She scored her first collegiate goal against Vanderbilt and tallied two on the year with four assists. She had a career-high two assists in the Mocs win over Middle Tennessee and notched the game winner against Mercer.
 
Hannah Opie is a nursing major from Murfreesboro, Tenn. She was named to the Dean's List and Athletics Director's Honor Roll and the SoCon Honor Roll. Opie made seven starts in 17 appearances in 2023, assisting on the game-tying goal against Mercer.
 
Senior Mackenzie Smith will graduate in December with a degree in biochemistry with biology and psychology minors. The Louisville, Tenn., native was team captain and named to the SoCon All-Conference First Team. She was named to the Southern Conference Honor Roll and the league's Fall All-Academic Teams. She is a member of the Chattanooga Dean's List and Athletics Director's Honor Roll. She closed out her career with 85 games played, the most in program history and 79 starts, second all-time. She ranks in the Top 10 at Chattanooga for points, goals scored, assists and shots taken. She started all 18 games in 2023 and was third on the team in scoring. She recorded four goals and two assists and one game winner.
 
Kelly Tuerff, a junior from Franklin, Tenn., is majoring in exercise science and health science. She was named to Chattanooga's Dean's List and Athletics Director's Honor Roll as well as the Southern Conference Honor Roll and Fall All-Academic Team. She was named to the league's All-Conference Second Team and made 17 starts in defense before a season-ending injury in the regular season finale. She took one shot on the year and assisted on the Mocs first goal in their win over Mercer.
 
The 2023 Academic All-District® Women's Soccer Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes soccer honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
 
Academic All-District® honorees are considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December. The CSC Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed on the following pages.
