CHATTANOOGA --- The fifth-seeded Chattanooga Mocs women's tennis team fell to No. 4 Mercer 4-1 on the opening day of the Southern Conference Tournament during quarterfinal round action on Thursday afternoon at Champions Club in Chattanooga.
 
Following the loss, Chattanooga concludes the season with a 14-8 overall record. Mercer advances to the semifinal round and improves to 13-9 on the season.
 
Mercer quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead following a strong effort in doubles action. The Bears won matches at No. 1 and No. 3 by 6-0 counts while the match at No. 2 went unfinished with a 5-2 lead featured in favor of Mercer.
 
UTC trailed 2-0 after a loss at No. 1 before Caroline Gibbens responded with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 to pull the team within one at 2-1. Tight matches across the board fell in favor of the team in orange with wins at No. 5 and No. 4 by 6-4, 6-3 and 7-5, 6-4 decisions, respectively, while Rozalie Dohnalova held a 7-6, 4-3 lead at No. 3 and Callie Billman battling in a 2-6, 6-6 tiebreaking second set.
