RALEIGH---Chattanooga Mocs graduate
Dorota Zalewska '23 got her start at the NCAA Raleigh Regionals Monday. She opened with a 3-under 69 at Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State. That puts her in a tie for third overall.
Â
It was a fantastic start with a birdie on the par 5 first hole. A dip with bogeys at three and four was surrounded by pars to complete the front side 1 over.
Â
She began the back like the opening nine with a birdie on 10. That was followed by another at the par 5 11th to get back under par. That was just a sign of things to come.
Â
Four straight pars gave way to another birdie binge. She played the final three holes birdie-par-birdie for a 3-under 69. Zalewska finished with a flourish on 18 holing her putt from off the green for the ending bird.
Â
"Dori played magnificently today," Coach
Colette Murray relayed after the round. "I told her afterwards that it was easily the most fun I've had on the course since Vanderbilt, which she agreed with. While she played well, Dori knows it could have easily been much lower.
Â
"She has two days to build on this. I told her to enjoy it until after dinner. Then we get focused for tomorrow."
Â
That's the top postseason round in school history topping 70 done three times by Christine Wolf '11 (2010), Jordan Britt '14 (2012) and her own second round in 2022. Zalewska is two strokes behind leaders Lauren Olivares (N.C. State) and Lottie Woad (Florida State) at 5 under.
Â
More importantly, she's got a 2-stroke lead for the individual berth to advance to the NCAA Finals. The top 5 teams and top individual on a non-advancing squad move on to Scottsdale, Ariz.
Â
The 54-hole event continues with the 18 holes Tuesday before ending Wednesday afternoon. Zalewska leads off No. 1 at 8:55 playing with Sarah Kahn (High Point) and Mallory Fobes (UNC Wilmington).
