Green Earns Second All-Conference; Wheatcroft named All-Freshman

CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- Chattanooga distance runner Lesley Green grabbed her second straight all-conference finish of the Southern Conference Championships, placing third in the 5000 meter run Tuesday evening at the Catamount Athletic Complex. Maddie Wheatcroft was named to the 1500 meter All-Freshman Team. The Mocs finished tied for eighth.

"The went out very slow," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "There was a huge pack. Lesley and [Gabbie Hoots, Samford] went to the front and immediately lifted the pace. By 3K, it was just Lesley and two Furman runners. All three were even with 400 meters to go. With 250 meters left, the Furman runners opened a gap. Lesley cruised it in for third."

Green finished with a time of 17:18.59, a little more than nine seconds off the lead pace.

Emma Russum placed 10th overall in the race with a time of 18:12.53 and Andrea Ellis ran a personal best time 19:13.42.

The day started with the 4x100 meter relay. Jessika Rennich led off with Lexi Foley taking the second leg, Reagan Ruth with the third and Imani Bryant anchoring the team. The team earned two points for the Mocs covering the distance in a time of 52.63.

"They did well and competed hard," Meyer said.

The 1500 meter race started at an extremely fast pace. Maddie Wheatcroft was the second freshman across the line in the race and was named to the SoCon All-Freshman team.

"It was a strong pace right from the gun," Meyer said. "Maddie and Leah [Boyd] hung on to the back and both finished strong, just outside of pacing. Hannah did well in her first race in a couple of years."

Wheatcroft posted a time of 4:38.76, placing ninth and Boyd was 10th at 4:55.14.

Sarah Unterholzner qualified for the 400 meter Hurdle final on Tuesday and placed sixth overall with a time of 1:06.17 and earning three more points for Chattanooga.

The final event of the day saw the Mocs 4x400 meter relay team post its best time of the season at 4:04.94. Unterholzner led off the team and handed the baton to Wheatcroft. Faith Brown picked it up for the third leg with Jessika Rennich anchoring the crew.

"Overall we are very pleased with this conference meet," Meyer said. "Lesley, Emma, Sarah, Maddie and our 4x400 had great performances.

Coach Ty Griffin and Mike Gadson had the ladies prepared and focused. Nathan and all the athletic training staff had us the healthiest we have been all year. Great team effort by our coaches, trainers and of course most importantly all these young women who worked so hard all year long."

Chattanooga finished tied for eighth place with Mercer. Lesley Green scored 16 points for the Mocs and earned two all-conference finishes in the championship.
