SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- The 22
nd-ranked Chattanooga Mocs football team upped its winning streak to four games after 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and a season-high 6.0 sacks led to a 23-13 victory over Southern Conference foe Wofford on Saturday evening inside Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.
Â
Following the win, Chattanooga improves to 4-1 overall and remains atop the SoCon league standings at 3-0. Wofford drops to 0-5 on the season and 0-2 inside conference play.
Â
"That's going to be every game from here on out in this league. We'll get everybody's best shot," said head coach
Rusty Wright.
Â
"We had 62 guys that all helped figure it out. We made a couple plays, made a couple stops, and we didn't change anything. We just went out there and made plays."
Â
The Chattanooga defense racked up a season-high 6.0 sacks and totaled 112 rushing yards in the fourth quarter alone to help break away from a 6-6 halftime tally.
Gino Appleberry led the ground attack with 93 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries while
Alex Mitchell led the defense with 11 total tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a pass breakup.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Wofford intercepted a
Chase Artopoeus pass on the game's opening drive and turned it into three points on a 41-yard field goal from Bridger Jones. Holding a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, Jones knocked through a 47-yard field goal on the second quarter's first place to extend the hosts lead to 6-0.
Â
Chattanooga put its first points on the board at the 8:19 mark of the second quarter after
Clayton Crile booted a 42-yard field goal right down the middle. The field goal show continued after Crile tied the game 6-6 on a 32-yard chip shot with 4:27 left before half, a score that would hold into the break.
Â
Wofford received the opening kick of the second half and marched 75 yards in six plays, capped off by a nine-yard touchdown run by David Legette, to take a 13-6 lead at the 12:33 mark of the third.
Jordan Walker came up with his second interception of the season at the Wofford 36 which set up a quick three play touchdown drive that ended with an Artopoeus three-yard touchdown run, tying things at 13-13 (7:36 3Q).
Â
The Mocs took their first lead of the contest, 16-13 (13:16 4Q), after Crile striped his third field goal of the game (32 yards). After the UTC defense continued to apply pressure and rack up its sack total, the offense mirrored their efforts with a 10-play, 78-yard touchdown drive finished by a
Gino Appleberry two-yarder with 5:18 left in the game to put away the Terriers, 23-13.

QUOTABLE | MORE
HC Rusty Wright on how big it was for Gino Appleberry to step up in the backfield.
"It was huge. We really have to start getting people back. It's huge when you have a kid like Gino. Our guys are really good about stepping up when they need to and doing those things. We just have to keep continuing to do those things."
DE Quay Wiggles on how they were able to wear down Wofford to get the road win.
"We knew coming into this game that we had to play all four quarters, it wasn't going to be just a one quarter game. We couldn't doubt our opponents even though they were 0-4, it didn't mean nothing. We had to play them just like they were 4-0 so we gave them our best shot the whole game."
