MURFREESBORO, Tenn. --- Chattanooga women's soccer tied its longest win streak in program history with a 2-1 win at Middle Tennessee for its fifth consecutive win this season.
Â
The Mocs, 5-1 overall, tied a 5-0 start to the 2009 season.
Mackenzie Smith got the Mocs on the board in the opening half and
Clarissa Salinas found the net for the first time this year for the game winner.
Â
Smith's goal came in the 27
th minute.
Zoey Mize sent a pass to
Birna Johannsdottir inside the box. With her back to the goal, she gathered the ball in and kicked it over to Smith who was charging in. Smith's shot from 19 yards out went into the top center of the net, just out of the MTSU keeper's reach.
Â
The Mocs controlled much of the first half, outshooting the Blue Raiders 9-5 in the frame with five shots on goal to none for MTSU.
Â
Middle Tennessee didn't take long to tie the match in the second half. A goal off a corner kick in the 56
th minute knotted up the contest, but UTC was not out.
Â
Chattanooga continued its push in the latter half, firing off 10 shots with five testing the opposing keeper. MTSU, while getting 10 shots in the second half as well, only managed two on goal. Mocs keeper
Claire Smith, who entered the game in the 75
th minute for an injured
Caroline Ekern, had the only save of the match for Chattanooga.
Â
Birna Johannsdottir drew a foul a few yards outside the top right corner of the box with 8:12 to play.
Zoey Mize lined up for the free kick as her team set up for the set piece.
Â
Mize sent the ball over the throng of charging players and right to Salinas in front of the net. Salinas started on the far side and ran to the middle through the defense and hit it home into the bottom center of the goal for the game winner.
Â
Chattanooga outshot MTSU 19-15 and had a 7-5 shots on goal advantage. Johannsdottir had a game-high six shots and Smith added four.
Kennedy Heavrin and
Caroline Richvalsky had three each. Chattanooga edged MTSU 6-5 on corner kicks.
Â
Ekern went down in the 75
th minute diving on the ball and had to leave the game, earning MTSU one of its two yellow cards.
Claire Smith made her collegiate debut and kept MTSU out of the goal the final 15:22 of the match.
Â
Middle Tennessee evens its record to 3-3-1 on the year. Chattanooga returns home to host Belmont Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Finley Stadium.
