PREVIEW: Women’s Golf Starts Spring in Georgia

Nieves Martin and the Chattanooga Mocs head to the Georgia lake country to open play in the 2024 half of the schedule.

CHATTANOOGA---It's time. Winter hibernation is complete. The Chattanooga Mocs women's golf team hits the links Friday opening spring play at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational on the Great Waters Course in Eatonton, Ga.
 

 
The 3-day, 54-hole event features 13 collegiate programs vying for the title. The Mocs have taken part in all six previous visits.
 
"We are looking forward to getting the spring started," Coach Colette Murray began. "Great Waters is a great course and Mercer runs a fun event. We are hoping to put three good rounds together as a team and see where it stacks up."
 
The lineup remains unchanged from the final two fall forays. Makenzie Cooper, Violeta Fernandez-Tagle, Giulia Foresta, Kera Healey and Nieves Martin lead the line.
 
The 81-player field sees the tourney open at 10 a.m., Friday with teams going off Nos. 1 and 10. The Mocs, paired with Florida Atlantic and South Dakota State, begin at 10:50 a.m., off of one. Healey gets the group started followed by Foresta, Martin, Fernandez-Tagle and Cooper.

  • Ranked No. 78 in the NCAA Ratings, second-highest ranked team in the field that includes five top 100 programs.
  • Cooper is the Mocs top-rated individual at No. 114. Western Kentucky's Catie Craig is tops among the field at No. 95.
  • Fernandez-Tagle is off to a great start. She's played par or better on 81.5 percent of her first 216 collegiate holes (183). She leads the team in pars with 156, fewest bogeys (39) & fewest others (1).
