GREENVILLE, S.C. (March 30, 2024) – The Chattanooga Mocs men's tennis team nearly came away with its second-straight thrilling league victory in as many days, but eventually fell 4-3 at Furman in Southern Conference action on Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
 
After the defeat, Chattanooga drops to 8-12 overall this season while evening its SoCon record at 2-2. The Mocs now sit in fifth place in the current league standings but trail the second-place spot by just one match in the loss column. Furman improves to 8-10 overall and 2-1 in the league after the win.
 
In doubles, the two teams split the No. 2 and No. 3 duos as Chattanooga's Cortland Grove and Jordan McClure remained perfect in SoCon doubles play (now 4-0) with a 6-2 victory in the second slot. Coming down to the No. 1 battle for the team point, Furman escaped with a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreak win to take a 1-0 lead heading towards singles action.
 
UTC gained a 2-1 lead in the match as Grove posted a 6-2, 6-4 win in the No. 4 position before Jakub Jupa earned his sixth-straight singles victory and fourth in SoCon competition with a 6-3, 6-4 decision in the top No. 1 pairing. The Paladins tied the match 2-2 with a hard-fought 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot.
 
Furman and Chattanooga split the No. 3 and No. 5 matches to lock at 3-3 with the former going to the hosts and the latter resulting in a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 victory for Kristof Kincses, his third singles win in the last four tries. With the match coming down to No. 6 singles, the Paladins' Walker Allen ultimately earned a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) comeback, tie-break win to give the team in purple a 4-3 overall victory.
 
Chattanooga returns to action on Friday, April 5, with a road contest at in-state and SoCon rival ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn. The match is slated for a 10 a.m. ET start and coverage links, if available, can be found on the schedule page at GoMocs.com leading up to first serve.
