Makenzie Cooper led the Chattanooga Mocs on day two of the Chattanooga Classic Monday at Council Fire Golf Club.

CHATTANOOGA---It was a newsworthy day at Council Fire Golf Club eclipsed only by, well, the near total eclipse time lapse mid round. The Chattanooga Mocs shot 4-over 288 and are seventh with 18 holes to play with a 583 total.
Michigan and South Florida are tied for the lead with 2-over 570. Western Kentucky is three back in third. The Wolverines' Monet Chun leads individually with 7-under 135.
The Mocs were led today by Makenzie Cooper. Her 1-under 70 was one better than Violeta Fernandez-Tagle. Nieves Martin had 1-over 72 while Kera Healey's 75 completed the team score. Giulia Foresta had the drop of 76.
Fernandez-Tagle is tied for eighth overall at level par (142). Cooper and Martin have matching 148s which is one better than Healey's 149 with Foresta another stroke behind at 150.
Alexis Daniel paced a tightly set of individual score with 75. Carmen Belmonte registered 76 just ahead of Imogen Rafferty's 77. Daniel is tied for 15th at 3 over (145). Belmonte and Rafferty are tied at 151.
The Mocs have had two days of good golf that's not reflected on the scoreboard.
"Today was gritty," Coach Colette Murray explained. "We were five or six over after the turn I think, and we finished at four. Mak bounced back well. I walked with her the first 12 holes and felt like she could've been 5 under.
"We've hit the ball really well, just nothing's been fallen. So, you hope that tomorrow is our low day, and we can bounce up the leaderboard and match the fight we've seen on the course."
There was a total eclipse of the record book today...
Chun's 61 (-10) set new tournament 18 and 36-hole records. SMU's Michelle Zhang set the former mark in last year's final 18 (64, -8). The 135 (-7) is the low 36-hole score by total, but it's one behind by par to Emma McMyler of Xavier (136, -8, 2023). The 54-hole standard is 207 (-9) by Anne Chen of Duke (2022) and McMyler (2023).
The Wolverines team total of 271 (-13) is another tournament record. It bests 277 (-11) by SMU In last year's final round.
The 36-hole record total also fell. Michigan's 570 topped SMU's 573 (-3) a year ago. It was later matched by the Bulls, while Western Kentucky ran level with the Mustangs mark.
Add in Lauren Gilchrist from Middle Tennessee hole in one on the par 3 third hole and much like a Durham Bulls mound visit with Crash Davis, we were dealing with a lot of stuff today.
Gilchrist measured the third at 146 yards. She took flight with a trusty 7 iron and jump-started a career best tying 1-under 70 with the ace.
Not to be outdone, Fernandez-Tagle provided a special moment of her own. On the 340-yard par 4 14th, she to out her 54 degree from 80 yards out and holed out for eagle. It was one of two eagles today on the counting cards with Cooper getting hers on the par 5 second.
The field completes the tournament Tuesday with a final 18. The shotgun start is slated for 8:30 a.m. Live scoring and tee times are linked above.
