Violeta Fernandez-Tagle led the Chattanooga Mocs on day one of the National Golf Invitational in Phoenix.

MARICOPA, Ariz.---The Chattanooga Mocs are fourth after 18 holes at the National Golf Invitational. The ladies shot an opening-card 296 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes and sit seven strokes off the lead.
UNC Wilmington had the low Friday total of 298. That's one ahead of Rutgers with Santa Clara three behind in third. The Mocs are fourth, five clear of Arkansas State in fifth followed by Jacksonville State (302), Mercer (303), USC Upstate (304), Florida Atlantic (304) and Austin Peay (304).
Violeta Fernandez-Tagle took the early individual lead with a 3-under 69. An eagle and three birdies set the stage for a 1-shot advantage over Jinger Heath of Jacksonville State and Minouche Rooijmans from UNC Wilmington.
Kera Healey joins her in the top 10 with an even-par 72. Makenzie Cooper chipped in 76 ahead of Giulia Foresta with 79. Alexis Daniel had the drop score of 81.
It was a pretty even effort shooting 3 over the opening nine and coming in at 5 over. The final two holes proved treacherous. The Mocs were 4 over through 16 before playing the finishing holes 4 over. That bettered the field by nearly a quarter of a shot as the holes averaged 1.06 scoring among the 50 student-athletes.
Day two tees off starts at 10:30 a.m., Eastern time. The Mocs, Arkansas State and Jacksonville State lead the field off No. 1. Daniel gets it started followed by Foresta (10:39), Cooper (10:48), Healey (10:57) and Fernandez-Tagle (11:06). Scoring and pairings are linked above.
