Women’s Golf: Academic Honors Abound

ABOUT CHATTANOOGA GOLF
CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs women's golf team is never short on academic accolades. Their excellence in the classroom closely mirrors the high-level performances in competition and in the community.
A trio of Mocs were honored in two different academic achievement squads. Nieves Martin and Kera Healey claimed spots on the CSC (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District At Large team. They are the first in the program since Maria Juliana Loza '12 more than a decade ago.
The team consists of student-athletes from a variety of sports. It requires a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and be at least a sophomore academically and athletically while playing a minimum 50 percent of team rounds. The following sports were included in the nominations: Beach Volleyball, Bowling, Crew, Fencing, Field Hockey, Golf, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Rifle, Skiing and Water Polo.
Martin and Healey were joined by freshman Violeta Fernandez-Tagle on the Women's Golf Coaches Association's All-American Scholar team. There were nearly 1,500 honored nationwide from 412 different programs. Its requirements mirror the CSC without the limitation on academic classification.
The trio are the 35th, 36th and 37th such honors in school history dating back to the first in 2010, once again, Loza. A total of 19 different Chattanooga student-athletes have been honored over the past 15 years.
The team combined for a 3.614 GPA in the fall and 3.534 in the spring. Fernandez-Tagle (Economics) and Imogen Rafferty (General Studies) had 4.0 semesters in the fall. All eight on the roster made the Athletic Director's Honor (3.0 or better) and Dean's List (3.2+) status in at least one semester: Fernandez-Tagle, Healey, Martin, Rafferty, Carmen Belmonte, Makenzie Cooper, Alexis Daniel and Giulia Foresta.
