CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs completed another strong academic term to close 2024. It is eye-popping with back-to-back semesters of every program recording 3.0 or better as a team. It makes the first calendar year with each squad topping the 3.0 mark for the period.
Â
"Our student-athletes continue to amaze me," Vice Chancellor for Athletics Mark Wharton stated. "It is no surprise because of the standard that's been set over the years. But still, the commitment I see from them in the classroom, in competition and in our community is special."
Â
The Mocs completed the fall term with a 3.38 GPA. That's the second best on record behind spring 2020 (3.42) which was the COVID-effected term. It also means the department has 3.3 or better in consecutive terms after a 3.31 in the spring.
Â
A record 235 student-athletes earned Dean's List status (3.2+) with another new mark set on the AD Honor Roll (3.0+) of 266. That means 80.1 percent completed the fall at 3.0 or better.
Â
"That's a testament to our coaching staffs in maintaining the importance of the classroom and what it means to each student-athletes future. It also highlights the tremendous work of our Student-Athlete Academic Enhancement Center under Dr. Emily Blackman and her staff. Their connection to the campus community brings everything together to provide each student-athlete the opportunity to excel."
Â
Seventy-five earned perfect 4.0 marks which is two shy of the record 77 set in spring 2020. Football set a new department standard with 15 4.0 students topping 14 by women's cross country/track & field in the spring of 2022 and again in the fall of that year.
Â
Soccer topped the team table with a 3.70 semester. It is the third straight at 3.7 or better. Twenty-five of 27 on the roster earned AD Honor Roll with 24 of those coming in on the Dean's List. Beach volleyball, softball, women's cross country/track & field and both tennis programs also exceeded the 3.5 threshold.
Â
In an ever-continuing effort to positively impact the student-athlete experience, the Student-Athlete Study Abroad Experience through the Health & Human Performance program has a 10-day trip to Argentina planned for early summer 2025. The program focuses on developing individual and global citizenship through the lens of leadership and sport.
Â
Twelve student-athletes will travel to Argentina to gain an understanding of the economic, political, cultural and social factors at play in an international context. During their time in Buenos Aires, students will visit local businesses, participate in discussions with international business leaders and professors, while engaging in service-learning and cultural tours.
