Soccer Falls in Overtime Heartbreaker to Furman

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Chattanooga women's soccer team saw its Southern Conference Tournament run come to a heartbreaking end Friday night, falling 2-1 in overtime to Furman in the quarterfinal round at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.

Sophomore forward Paige Thomas gave the Mocs a late spark, breaking a scoreless tie in the 84th minute with her ninth goal of the season. Senior Clarissa Salinas delivered the assist to set up the go-ahead strike, igniting the Chattanooga bench.

However, Furman responded just over two minutes later when Norah Roller netted the equalizer in the 86th minute off a feed from Katie Bengough. The Paladins carried that momentum into overtime, where Roller struck again in the 91st minute, this time assisted by Maddie Massie, to seal the 2-1 victory and advance Furman to the semifinals.

Chattanooga outshot Furman 18-6, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal, and held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. Despite the offensive pressure, Furman goalkeeper Reese DeJong made six saves, frustrating the Mocs' attack throughout the night.

Senior goalkeeper Caroline Ekern recorded two saves for Chattanooga, while Caroline Richvalsky led the team with four shots, three on target. EG Dillard added four shots as well and Thomas fired off three.

The Mocs conclude their season with a 10-5-4 overall record and a 4-2-3 mark in Southern Conference play, marking another strong campaign under head coach Gavin McKinney.
