Head Coach Deandra Schirmer
Opening Statement
"It's a make or miss sport, and I really felt like they couldn't miss, and I really felt like we couldn't make. We kind of went a little bit dry there in the third, yes, you know, we gave up 21 points. That was our biggest quarter of giving up points as well. But they're getting points in transition and they're getting points off of our missed three's on runout shots.
And so, you know, it really changed the dynamic of the game. If you can hit those shots. And so, you know, from a coaching standpoint, it's a little bit difficult.
I think that we're still learning on what that looks like when we're not hitting shots, how we've got to be able to respond. And I think that this group has shown that they can lock in and do some things, but honestly, in the third, we weren't focused enough. Ashley Bates had a fantastic game for them. But she hit three threes easy in the first, and then we're letting her tee off in the second half.
That's unacceptable. And we knew that we had to play a really good game to compete And I don't think we played well. And that's something where, you know, as a coaching staff, we got to get back in the gym or we got to show them, you know, discipline matters.
Being on your assignment matters, they had really, really talented players, but a lot of them were one dimensional and they got their dimension that we worked on and we're trying to take away. So just trying to be a little bit more poised and disciplined to the game plan."
On the Troy press and third quarter
"I think we got sped up and sped up by the impress a little bit and we always talk about the presses for a number of different ways. One's to turning over, two is to speed you up.
Three is to slow you down, you know? Yeah. And they did all of the above against us tonight.
I think that, you know, we're starting off the third and we're getting wide open looks to a knockdown shooter and Izzy, and she's not hitting, you know, or we're getting wide open looks in the press and we're not hitting those. So, you know, it's a little bit tough. I was very, very disappointed by how we ended the third, you know, like, that three to end the third, I felt like was a backbreaker.
We ended in the fourth bringing it back to a 15-point game and making a little bit respectable. We knew that they were going to get gassed and they were going to get a little bit tired. That's what happened at the end of the second quarter.
So we knew we would have it an advantage there. But the problem was, was, you know, we couldn't stop the bleeding in the third, and that was something that was really disappointing from a coaching standpoint."
On looking ahead
"Yeah, and I think that, you know, we're expecting a lot out of our players, specifically our returners, and I think they're feeling that a little bit. You know, they're feeling the hard coaching at the moment. For us, it's all about doing it by design and making sure we're pushing them when we need to and all that kind of stuff. And I think a game like this is one where it's an eye opener because this is a game that if we want to be at the level we want to be at, this is this is it, you know? So we got a ways to go.
We got 20 point deficit to go to get to where we want to be at come the end of the season. And I really feel like it starts with getting in the gym and hitting shots because we're not going to beat a really good team shooting 31% from the field."
