vs. Bellarmine – McKenzie Arena
Â
Coach Deandra Schirmer, 2nd season
Opening Statement
"The game started, and it didn't go how we wanted it to go. I think we kind of were knocked back on our heels, and that's a credit to Bellarmine. I thought they came out, were playing well and they were hitting shots. It took us until the third quarter to really respond, and we can't have that. I'm proud of how they responded, and the one thing I want this group to know is we're still figuring it out. It's a group project, and we're nowhere near finished."
Â
On if last year's tough defeat at the buzzer weighed on their minds late in the contest:
"Obviously that game was heavy on our brain. One of the pivotal moments of this whole entire game was when we drew up a set with 30 seconds left. We're only up by two and they trapped. Caia was amazing, just calm as cucumber. She did her job, got us set. That won us the game right there."
Â
On contributions in the second half by Izzy McPherson & Sarah Owona:
"I think that as far as stepping up, these two –
Caia Elisaldez &
Gianna Corbitt – have been carrying the load a little bit. It was nice to see Izzy and Sarah come in, hit some threes and spread the defense. (Caia & Gianna) have played a lot of big minutes, and obviously we have a lot of confidence in them. Once we can get that other group confident, we're going to see a much different team, and it's our job as a coaching staff to get that. I think that we're close."
Â
Caia Elisaldez, Jr.-G
On Bellarmine's hot shooting in the first half:
"I think going into the locker room, it was okay, they're hot and having an awareness of that. Fundamentally, we've played teams and shooters, and we just have to adjust. I think our team did a really, really good on staying motivated, that we have worked hard this week and we have worked on all the things that we needed to in that aspect to come out here and make that adjustment."
Â
On the poise in the final minute to win a close game:
"In those final seconds, I don't think there's anything else to think of about but each other. I can't tell you anything else I think of besides my team. I was going to do what it took for us to win."
Â
Gianna Corbitt, So.-F
On turning the page after halftime:
"We get determined. We don't get discouraged going into the locker room. We know we're capable of coming back. It's us sitting down on defense, getting the rebounds, ending the possession and getting out and into our offense. And then when we play as a team, we're capable to beat anybody."
Â
On key to getting off to better starts:
"I think confidence. When you're just shooting, knock it down. Knowing that you've worked on it, we've worked on shots like crazy all season. Just knock it down."
