Postgame Quotes vs. Mercer
Jan. 30 – McKenzie Arena
Head Coach Deandra Schirmer
Opening Statement:
"We obviously had a very good offensive output in that second quarter, but it was fueled off of our steals and defense. We can make sure we're doing the little things, whether that's a box out, being in a gap or getting a seal. That's going to fuel us to everything else in the game, and so just really proud of our group for honing in and getting the win tonight."
On Early Struggles:
"I think a lot of credit goes to the Mercer staff and team. I thought they came in here, ready to go. They had a great game plan, and you know, started off in the first quarter and hit us in the mouth. We know they're a very talented team, and I think that we responded accordingly that our defense picked up our rebounding, picked up, and then all of that fuels our offense."
On supporting the We Back Pat Foundation tonight
Pat Summit is the champion of women's basketball. She's a champion of women's athletics.
She's somebody that I've idolized my entire life, not just being an amazing coach, but even a better person, with 100% graduation rate. All the things that she did, she did it with heart and love, and she was amazing. And I think that in honoring her, we're honoring how much work has been put in for us to have an amazing night like tonight, where we have, you know, a big crowd, and we have a lot of support, and we have the resources that we do, all because Pat worked so hard to create such an amazing product that everybody wants to get behind.
I think, you know, Izzy (McPherson) here, she's from Tennessee, so personally, Pat Summit means a lot to her.
The other thing for me personally, my grandmother passed away from Alzheimer's, and my mom was actually able to be at the game today, so that was pretty cool that we were able to honor Pat Summit and talk about raising funds for Alzheimer's research, in honor of Pat Summit, obviously, but also those who have suffered with the disease like my grandma."

On Adjusting to the Physicality:
"We knew that they were going to be physical. I'll give them credit when it started. I was, like, oh wow, okay. After the first quarter, I think we were able to hone in on what was happening on what we needed to do to fix it. I think we just knew we had to match it, and we just had to keep playing the way that they kept playing through it."
Izzy McPherson, R-Fr.-G/F
On growing confidence in her shooting during a good run of form:
"I'm a lot more confident now (than at the start of the year). I think it just goes back to my teammates still having the confidence in me, and my coaches still having confidence in me. And then that leads me to know that I can still be confident. I can take this shot and it's a good shot for us. So it feels really good."
