Hunter Mason and the Chattanooga Mocs got the 2026-26 season underway with a strong Sunday performance in Salem, Va.

The Chattanooga Mocs wrestling team placed nine Sunday at the Southeast Open. The group included six different weight classes in all-around performance. Hunter Mason led the way capturing the 149 bracket.

Mason's run began with a fall at 1:19 over Campbell's Q'veli Quintanilla. Decisions followed over TJ Langley from West Virginia (3-1) and Ryan Kennedy of Maryland (4-1). That sent him to the finals matching up with defending SoCon Champion Anderson Heap.

Mason opened with a takedown with 1:18 left in the first period. Heap got out 11 seconds later but our Moc got back into his offense. He earned a takedown with 12 seconds remaining and got Heap into a pinning predicament locking it down four seconds later for the gold medal.

The Mocs nine placers led all schools. Host Virginia Tech managed eight along with App State, while Maryland registered seven. Along with Mason's win, Ethan Uhorchuk was runner-up at 141.
