March 8 – vs Samford – Harrah's Cherokee Center
Â
Coach Deandra Schirmer, 2nd Season
Opening Statement:
"I'm gutted for our team. March Madness is madness for a reason. I thought our team played very, very hard tonight. All credit to Samford, I thought they played fantastic shooting 58 percent from three. Tip our hats to them, From our standpoint, I'm proud of our fight. This group of young women, they're very special individuals, whether that's basketball related or not. I'm very proud of them always, so that doesn't change after today's result."
Â
On what Samford did to create issues for defense today:
"Hitting threes. When you have a team that's able to spread the floor, pack line defense isn't as effective. You're kind of on an island by yourself every single time they're driving to the basket, because if you bring help, that open person is going to hit a three. It's really a choice of are we giving up twos or threes at that point."
Â
On fourth quarter surge:
"We tried a little switch up in the fourth quarter. That kind of brought us a little bit closer. We were able to make a push. Credit to our team, we were down at halftime and all of them in the locker room were like, 'we got this'. I felt we were poised throughout. Sometimes, there are games where the other team was just better and that was kind of how I felt after today's game."
Â
Caia Elisaldez, Jr.-G
On what she learned from her teammates this year:
"God hand picks people to put in your life for a reason. My mom used to always say it's either for a lesson or for a lifetime. He put me alongside the 10 girls next to me for a lifetime. It doesn't matter what happened today. I am forever indebted to each and every one of them."
Â
Izzy McPherson, Fr.-G
On her 17-point effort:
"I don't feel like it really matters. I just want (to win) a championship. That's it. I didn't even realize it during the game."
