CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga soccer team controlled much of the action Wednesday night at Finley Stadium but was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against UT Martin after the Skyhawks equalized on a penalty kick in the final minute in the season opener.
 
The Mocs outshot UT Martin 13-2 and held a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal, creating numerous scoring opportunities throughout the contest.
 
After a scoreless first half, Chattanooga continued to press forward and nearly broke through in the 59th minute when Paige Thomas rattled a shot off the crossbar.
 
The Mocs were awarded a penalty kick in the 70th minute, but the attempt struck the post, keeping the match scoreless despite Chattanooga's sustained offensive pressure.
 
The breakthrough finally came in the 77th minute. Quinn Johnson hit a low shot that found the back of the net in the 77^th minute on a free kick, giving Chattanooga a 1-0 lead. Johnson finished with a team-high five shots and scored the Mocs' lone goal.
 
The Skyhawk's best opportunity came late when the visitors were awarded a penalty kick in the 90th minute. Allie Carroll converted from the spot at 89:06 to pull the Skyhawks level at 1-1.
 
EG Dillard paced Chattanooga with two shots on goal, while Emma Reeves, Ayden Wood and Emily Betterton each tested UT Martin goalkeeper Mac Titus, who finished with five saves.
 
Defensively, Chattanooga limited UT Martin to just two shots and did not allow a shot on goal from the run of play. Goalkeeper Caroline Ekern was not required to make a save as the Mocs largely controlled possession and territory throughout the match.
