Four Second Half Goals Lead Mocs to 5-0 Shutout at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Chattanooga women's soccer erupted for four second-half goals and posted a shutout on the road Sunday evening, defeating Winthrop 5-0 at Eagle Field.

The Mocs improved to 1-0-1 on the season behind goals from five different sources and a strong defensive effort that limited the Eagles to just five shots and one shot on goal. Winthrop dropped to 0-2.

"Great team performance in really tough conditions," McKinney stated. "So many players made a huge impact on the game, which is reflected in having four different goal scorers. I'm really proud of the mentality we showed and the quality of our performance."

Chattanooga struck first in the 16th minute when Quinn Johnson picked up the ball off the bounce after a 1v1 with the keeper and found the back of the net at the 15:49 mark. The goal proved to be the game-winner and gave the Mocs a 1-0 lead they carried into halftime.

After controlling play throughout the opening 45 minutes, Chattanooga's attack exploded in the second half.

Landry Olson doubled the advantage in the 73rd minute, scoring off a corner sequence to make it 2-0. The Winthrop keeper was able to punch out the corner, but Olson chased it down, settled and fired a shot to the right of the keeper.

Just over five minutes later, the Mocs scored back-to-back goals. Ayden Wood finished a feed from Molly Johnson at 77:45 for a 3-0 lead before Johnson added a goal of her own, finishing an assist from Olson to stretch the margin to four less than two minutes later.

In the 85th minute, the Mocs fifth goal came on an own goal by the Eagles. Winthrop tried to clear a ball at the goal and put it in the net instead. In the play-by-play this was initially credited to a UTC player but corrected after the game.

The Mocs outshot Winthrop 14-5 and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Chattanooga placed seven shots on frame while allowing just one shot on goal defensively.

In goal, Caroline Ekern earned the shutout victory, playing all 90 minutes and making one save. She improved on her program record for wins with her 34th and she posted her 22nd clean sheet, also a school record.

Chattanooga remains on the road to take on Belmont on Thursday, August 20 in Nashville. The game kicks off at 6:00 p.m. Eastern time.
