2013-14 Season Review

The 2013-14 athletics season was a banner year for the Chattanooga Mocs.  UTC won seven Southern Conference titles in five sports and nine teams were represented in the postseason.  The Mocs finished 120th in the NACDA Learfield Sports Directors' Cup, their second-best showing in school history.  UTC had four All-Americans, six SoCon Players of the Year, three SoCon Tournament MVPs, seven individual SoCon Champs, two Academic All-Americans and a school record 81 on the Academic All-SoCon Team.

Men's Basketball (Will Wade, head coach)

8-15, 12-4 SoCon/2nd · CIT 1st Round

· Head Coach Will Wade won Anton Foy SoCon Coach of the Year honors in his first season. It is the first for a Mocs mentor since Mack McCarthy in 1993.
· Z. Mason ended his career with a bang earning the program's first SoCon Defensive Player of the Year award. Mason was also first team All-SoCon (media & coaches) joined by Casey Jones (coaches). He is the first Moc to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 blocks in a career.
· Mason set new school records for rebounding average (9.7), blocks in a season (92) and double-doubles (15).
· The 12-4 league mark is the best winning percentage in league play (75%) since the 1996-97 Sweet 16 team won 78.6 percent (11-3) of its SoCon games. The squad's 10-game win streak from Dec. 29 through Jan. 25 was the longest since an 11-game run in 1996-97.
· The Mocs led the conference in attendance averaging 3,895 fans per game. The UNCG contest drew 6,648 fans, which was the largest crowd since 9,234 showed up on January 28, 2009 for the Mocs' matchup with Stephen Curry and the Davidson Wildcats.

Women's Basketball (Jim Foster, head coach)
29-4, 18-0 SoCon/1st/Tournament Champions · NCAA 1st Round

· The Lady Mocs claimed their 13th SoCon title in 15 years and the 19th overall for the program.  UTC tied a school record with 29 wins for the second year in a row.    
· UTC advanced to its 12th NCAA Tournament.
· UTC is 39-0 at home over the last three seasons, currently the longest home court winning streak in the nation.  
· Taylor Hall became the first SoCon women's player to be named Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Tournament MVP.  She was also the SoCon Female Athlete of the Year and invited to the WNBA's Seattle Storm training camp.  
· Hall, Ashlen Dewart and Alex Black were all selected to the All-SoCon team.  Chelsey Shumpert was an All-Freshman team pick.
· UTC went undefeated in league play for the fourth time in school history.
· First year head coach Jim Foster was selected the Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Coach of the Year.

Cross Country (Bill Gautier, head coach)
Men (2nd SoCon/11th NCAA Regional) · Women (5th SoCon/15th NCAA Regional)
· Lucas Cotter placed fifth at the SoCon meet and was named All-Conference first team while Mark Cole finished 11th and made the second team.
· Cotter earned All-Region honors with a 17th place finish at the NCAA South Region Championship.  He also earned SoCon Runner of the Week honors.
· Lucas Cotter earned Capital One Academic All-American Third Team honors.
· The men had the nation's Top GPA (3.71) for the second time in three years.
· Teghan Henderson led the women with a 20th place finish at the NCAA National Championships to earn All-American honors.  
· Henderson claimed the Southern Conference title and was named the league Runner of the Year.  She was also a two-time SoCon Runner of the Week and Runner of the Month winner.  
· Henderson earned USTFCCCA Academic Honors, as well as Capital One Academic All-District recognition.  

Football (Russ Huesman, head coach)
8-4, 6-2/T1st SoCon

· Chattanooga shared the SoCon title for the first time since 1984.  
· UTC's eight wins are the most since 1980 and the six SoCon wins are the most in school history.
· UTC finished the year No. 25 in the FCS Coaches Poll and No. 23 in The Sports Network Top-25 for the first final national ranking since 1984.
· Junior Davis Tull repeated as the SoCon Defensive Player of the Year.  He set the Mocs all-time sack record (26.5) during the season.
· Sophomore QB Jacob Huesman was named the SoCon Offensive Player of the Year.  He was second in the SoCon and No. 4 in the nation with a 68.3 completion percentage.
· Tull and senior DB Kadeem Wise both earned All-American honors.
· Tull became the Mocs' first Capital One Academic All-American.
· Head Coach Russ Huesman was named the SoCon Coach of the Year, joining Joe Morrison as the only Mocs to earn the honor twice.
· UTC tied a school record with nine Mocs on the All-SoCon team.

Men's Golf (Mark Guhne, head coach)
2nd SoCon · T6th NCAA Regional

· Mark Guhne's Mocs made UTC's eighth consecutive regional appearance this season traveling to the NCAA Eugene Regional. The team finished tied for 6th with UNF, five strokes off the cutline for fifth behind No. 22 South Carolina.
· Senior Chris Robb earned a berth in the NCAA Championship as an individual with his play in Eugene. His 2-under 208 is a new school record for NCAA Championship play as is his T15 finish. His final round 64 is also a finals record for a Moc and ties NCAA Postseason mark with Steven Fox (2012 Bowling Green Regional). For his efforts, Robb earned GCAA/PING All-America honorable mention. His is the third All-American in school history.
· Robb and junior Liam Johnston made the All-SoCon team. Wes Gosselin and Ewan Scott were named to the SoCon All-Freshman team.
· Gosselin captured his first collegiate title at the Savannah Quarters Individual in early February.
· The Mocs posted their best 54-hole total since 2010, shooting 9-under par 855 at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate in October, powered by a 15-under par second round score of 273 which is the third lowest round in the school's record books and best by the team since posting the same number at the 2009 Administaff ASU Invitational.

Women's Golf (Colette Murray, head coach)
1st SoCon · 17th NCAA Regional

· Colette Murray was named SoCon Coach of the Year for the fourth time and for the second year in a row. Her Mocs won their fifth straight Southern Conference title. It was the second tourney win of the season coupling with the Starmount Fall Classic win in October. Those are the 15th and 16th team titles in the program's seven seasons of competition.
· Emily McLennan was SoCon Medalist. It's the fourth consecutive year a Moc has claimed the individual title, each time by a different student-athlete. Emily joined Emma de Groot (2011), Jordan Britt (2012) and Agathe Sauzon (2013), but her four-shot win was the largest margin of victory by the quartet.
· Britt earned SoCon Golfer of the Year honors. She is the second in school history joining de Groot (2011). She matched single season records of six top 5 finishes (de Groot), 10 par or better rounds (de Groot) and three rounds in the 60s (Christine Wolf). Britt set new standards for 36-hole score (-7, 137) as well as eagles tallied in a season (5) and career (7).
· McLennan's SoCon win was her first as a collegian. She followed it in June winning the Tennessee Women's Amateur. Couple her fine play with being a 4.0 student and you have the prototypical student-athlete. She and Britt were joined on the All-SoCon squad by Agathe Sauzon.

Soccer (J.D. Kyzer, head coach)
5-13-0, 0-10 SoCon/11th

· Team recorded 24 assists - ranks third on UTC's single season list.
· Crystal Mackezyk posted seven assists, the fourth best mark on record at UTC.  She also climbed the career charts for scoring (8th - 35), goals (8th - 13), assists (T9th - 9).  She also ranked 10th in the league in points (19), fifth for points per game (1.19), ninth in goals per game (0.38), fourth for assists (7) and second for assists per game (0.44)
· Hannah Wyatt and Logan Higgins were named to the College Sports Madness SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team.
· Taylor Mangrum ranked seventh in the SoCon for saves percentage (.753), second for saves (116)  and second for saves per game (7.25)
· Lauren Thomas ranked 10th in the league for shutouts.

Softball (Frank Reed, head coach)
34-21, 13-7 SoCon/2nd · Tournament Champions · NCAA Athens Regional
·  Chattanooga won its 12th Southern Conference Tournament Championship while appearing in its ninth NCAA Regional Tournament.
·  Sophomore Katie Henderson was named the SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player, posting a 3-0 record, one save and three shutouts.
·  Freshman Jesslyn Stockard, sophomore Sam Taylor and junior Sarah Beth Roberts joined Henderson on the SoCon All-Tournament Team.
·  Roberts and Henderson were both named to the All-SoCon Second Team by the league's coaches.
·  Roberts paced the Mocs offensively with a .343 batting average and a team-best 59 hits.  The junior also led Chattanooga with 14 doubles and tied for the team-lead with six homeruns.  Roberts also totaled 17 multi-hit games.
·  Henderson and junior Taylor Deason split the workload in the circle, garnering a combined 33 wins.  Henderson was 19-12 with a 2.01 ERA while Deason finished 14-7.  Deason's 1.49 ERA ranked 20th in the nation.
·  Sophomore Alyssa Taylor had a team-best 14-game hitting streak.
·  Softball set a program record academically, posting a 3.36 G.P.A. in the fall semester before nearly repeating with a 3.35 G.P.A. in the spring.

Men's Tennis (Carlos Garcia, head coach)
7-14, 1-8 SoCon/9th

· Head coach Carlos Garcia wrapped up his 13th season with the Mocs, guiding a very young squad through a tough Southern Conference schedule.
· Sophomore Luke Saunders led the team with a 14-15 mark in singles play.  He was 8-7 at No. 4 and 4-4 in SoCon matches.
· Jorge Varon was the lone senior on the team.  He posted an 11-20 singles record and was 5-4 at No. 2.  
· Junior Pavels Grigorjevs made the Academic All-SoCon team.
· The Mocs hosted the SoCon Tournament at the Champions Club and defeated Davidson in the first round.  

Women's Tennis (Jeff Clark, head coach)
18-5, 7-2 SoCon/3rd

· The Mocs scored 18 wins for the second year in a row, the most for the program since 1991.
· Chattanooga defeated two NCAA Tournament teams in Elon and Murray State, and all five losses were to teams listed in the final ITA team rankings.
· UTC finished third in the SoCon regular season race with a 7-2 league mark.  The seven league wins are the most since 2000 and the third place showing is the best since 2002.  
· The Mocs hosted the SoCon Tournament at the Champions Club, falling to Samford in the semifinals.
· Sophomore Kayla Jones was a first team All-SoCon pick in singles while senior Alexa Flynn and junior Kaylene Chadwell were first team doubles selections.  Junior Claire Mulyadi and sophomore Kelsey Coots made the doubles second team.  
· Flynn, Mulyadi, Chadwell, Jones and sophomore Alison Storie made the Academic All-SoCon team.  
· UTC was ranked No. 9 in the final ITA Ohio Valley Regional rankings.  
· The Mocs earned the ITA Team Academic Award.  

Indoor/Outdoor Track & Field (Bill Gautier, head coach)
Men (7th-In/6th-Out) · Women (6th-In/7th-Out)
· James Stovall named to All-Freshman team in the triple jump at the Indoors.  
· Mark Cole won the 3000m at the ETSU Niswonger Invitational and earned All-SoCon honors with a second place finish in the 10,000m at the Outdoor Championhsips.  
· Harry Smithers (10K), Nathan Wanuch (Steeplechase), Iman Isang (110 hurdles) also earned All-SoCon honors.   
· Paul Stuart (10k) and Trevor Janssen (1500M) made the SoCon All-Freshman Team.
· Teghan Henderson was a two-time All-Conference performer placing second in the 3000m and third in the 5000m in indoor compeititon.  She won the 5K and the 10K at the SoCon outdoors and finished 19th in the 5K at the NCAA Regionals.  She also set a school record (16:13.03) in 5000 meter at Stanford Invitational.  She was named the SoCon OTK Freshman of the Year.  

Volleyball (Travis Filar, head coach)
4-27, 3-13 SoCon/10th

· Mocs hosted a record crowd of 1,532 at Maclellan Gym September 5 as Chattanooga took on Tennessee in the first match of the Country Inn & Suites Invitational.  It was the largest crowd to watch a Mocs volleyball match in program history.
·  UTC upset 2012 SoCon North Champion Samford 3-0 at home, defeating the Bulldogs for the first time since 2010.
·  Sophomore Briana Reid lead the Mocs with 265 kills, averaging 2.25 kills per set.  Reid also collected 396 digs and 158 assists.
· Academically, the team excelled with a 3.35 G.P.A. in the fall and 3.42 G.P.A. in the spring.

Wrestling (Heath Eslinger, head coach)
16-7, 7-0 SoCon/1st · 51st NCAAs

· The Mocs won their 28th Southern Conference title while sweeping both the regular season and tournament crowns.
· The Mocs were ranked No. 24 in the final USA Today/NWCA/AWN poll.  
· UTC sent five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships and finished 51st.
· Junior Corey Mock (165) won the SoCon title and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the SoCon Tournament.  
· Junior Nick Soto (133) won his third SoCon title.  He defeated then No. 1 Ryan Mango of Stanford during the regular season for one of the biggest individual wins in school history.
· Junior Levi Clemons won the SoCon title at 149.
· Senior Alex Hudson (157) and freshman Dawson Peck (285) both represented the Mocs at the NCAA with at-large bids.
· The Mocs set a new attendance record for home events in 2013-14, averaging 1,373 fans per home event.
